Ford Mustang GT & Mach 1 Lose Horsepower and Torque for 2022

Stricter emissions are leading to the 2022 Ford Mustang GT and Mach 1 losing 10 horsepower and 10 pound-feet of torque.

Typically, when a new model year is being released, fans can anticipate some exciting changes. Some new colors, or wheel designs are typical. Maybe some updated technology features will be part of the new model year. A new appearance package is also typical. And if we are lucky, we sometimes even get an increase in power. Well, strike up the sad trombones because the folks over at Ford Authority are reporting that the 2022 Ford Mustang GT and Mach 1 will each be losing power. That is right, our beloved Coyote engine is being throttled back for the new year. The culprit appears to be every performance car enthusiast’s villain, emissions standards.

Output for the 2022 Ford Mustang GT will drop from 460 horsepower to 450. Torque will drop from 420 pound-feet to 410. The Mach 1 will take a similar hit. The 2021 car makes 480 horsepower, but that will drop to 470 in the 2022. Torque will also drop from 420 pound-feet to 410. Truth be told, could the average driver tell the difference on the street? Probably not, however, losing power is not the direction we want to see the Mustang going.

The power cuts do not apply to the 5.2L Predator V8 that powers the GT500. That car should power into 2022 with the same outrageous 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque figures. On the other end of the scale the EcoBoost turbo 2.3-liter inline-four is also not impacted. It is expected to keep the 310 horsepower (330 with the optional Performance Package) and 350 pound-feet of torque figures for 2022. So, in theory the EcoBoost does close the performance gap a bit between it and the V8-powered GT and Mach 1. On the bright side, at least the Mustang GT and Mach 1 still make glorious V8 noises.

Door sill

For the 2022 model year there are other changes planned for our beloved Mustang. These changes may not make up for the sting of losing power but at least it is something. There are seven new paint colors that are expected to debut in 2022. It is also expected that an all-new appearance package will be offered in the new model year. This is in addition to the already announced Ice White and Stealth editions. Also, the 2022 order banks have opened up and deliveries are expected to start in Q1 2022.

Stealth Mustang

The question now becomes, do you place an order for a new 2022 Ford Mustang GT or do you look for a used 2021 model? Have the 2018 through 2021 models just become even more desirable and valuable? The used car market is already crazy but with the latest announcement of a decrease in power this may drive even more buyers into the used market. Used prices could increase even further.

2022 Mustang Stealth

That all remains to be seen, but this announcement of a power decrease is not good news and does not bode well for the future of our Mustang. The saying that good things come to those that wait may no longer apply. If you are looking for V8 power in your next sports car, you might want to move fast. The days of the Coyote and any V8 for that matter appear to be numbered.
