Bad News

We found out today that we (AAI) will be down next week and possibly the week after that due to a part shortage. A module on the 302 V-8 is in very short supply, and the F-150 at Dearborn has priority, so they will get all the 5.0's for 1 or 2 weeks. They will make it official on Thursday, they wouldn't post it today, but management would privately say we will be down. We were told 2 months ago this part shortage could happen, and it finally did. I guess we will be adding even more Saturdays in the next 2 months. Enjoy the down time and then enjoy the overtime!
This was posted yesterday at the Blueovalforums in the Ford Employee Forum.

2011 F-150's have all been arriving here with 5.0L's since the 6.2 is limited availability, the 3.7L V6 has almost no demand, and the 3.5L EcoBoost is late availability. Ford makes more profit selling F-150's than Mustangs, so this is understandable even though it's a bummer for those of us waiting on Mustangs.

What kind of module are we talking about?

Don't know, I have been unable to find any kind of official news from Ford about this. If this is true I would bet that it set back production for more than just two weeks, maybe three or four until things get back in order, however I am far from an expert. It just seems they always say a week when it is really two.

The good news is that I doubt it will push back the delivery of my Boss more than I expected when I ordered it. All the talk of cars getting to the dealer in early Feb was nice but I never expected that.

I'd be curious to see if it is a part common to both 5.0L V8s or just the GT version.

And I am also curious how this part shortage jives with this posted scheduling information.

That post just adds to this "rumor", however with my limited knowledge it does not sound how the factory works. Only building the Bosses or Shelby's sounds great but is this how the real world (factory world) really works? I was thinking why not just crank out the V6 Mustangs during this time. Again things don't always work like that. It may be cheaper to close the whole plant until they have all parts, after all the they must spend a lot of time and money piutting all the cars in order to be built and it would be costly to change that last minute.

From a laymans point of view you would think it would be easier to build white V8 convertibles one day and black V6's another but we all know that is not how it is done.

Hopefully one of the insiders can add to this.

I, too, have been wondering how things were going on that front. Thanks for the update!

It doesn't sound like it, but I've been following that thread. We had a lot of clutch and transmission issues, followed by TSBs with the 07-09 GT500s. I have had two clutches and one transmission under warranty already. They made a running change to the clutch and/or flywheel no less than twice and once with the transmission. As far as I know they never stopped production for it.

That said, I'm glad they seem to be narrowing the shifting issue down to the pressure plate bolts and fluid. Assuming that fixes it, we may avoid the clutch/transmission issue....especially now with this rumored delay of 1-2 weeks.

Sounds like a different problem then the author was talking about. So far I have not found any official announcement about a shutdown and the thread was not added to or updated.

Well it's official now. I just received notice from my dealer that I got bumped from 1/31 to 2/28 AAI. I assume it's related to the module for the 302 motor referenced above, but he didn't have any details at this point. If everything else "goes as planned" this isn't necessarily bad news since I won't be able to drive it until late March at best. The problem is that the problems have just started so the odds that it gets pushed again might be higher.

I will say this, being a seasoned and now retired Ford employee. The forum mentioned above does have valuable information from insiders such as myself. I know when there is production halts and parts shortage Ford does tend to lean towards plants with volume and in this case the F 150 does make more profit for the company. I built F 150's, Contours, Mystiques, Harley F 150's, and even the Lincoln Blackwood for many years and I seen these same roller coasters as post in this thread. I know as a consumer and then provider I would rather wait a few more days then spend my time as a new owner in the waiting room after taking delivery.

The union confirmed today we have the next 2 weeks off, and management said meetings were being held at the end of our shift discussing a third week. Maintenance workers were told it would be 3 straight weeks off by their bosses, but the union won't comment until until it's official. Mazda didn't want the second week off and they would be pissed if it's 3.
This is a new post over there. Cloud9: getting pushed back 4 weeks hurts, I assumed it would be in that range. Been cold in FL but not enough to stop me from driving the car, too bad.

Dealer told me that once it's out of the plant it takes about 7-8 days to get to Cottage Grove by rail. Once there he can call and mark it hot and they usually see it by truck in about 2-4 days. So it looks like two weeks after it leaves the plant. Anyone know what production time is typically? With several people reporting ETAs 3 weeks and less from their production date, it would seem it's about a week for production.

If I see it by the end of March it would actually be "perfect". I'm holding on to that rainbow for now

I'd rather get mine in March instead of February also.

If you check out the VIN/build/delivered thread for the 2011's you will see there is a huge disconnect between "left the plant" and leaving the factory lot. It can depend upon the weather, the phase of the Moon, and especially whether your mode of transport is unionized (non-union transports get loaded last).

Well you don't get much more unionized than the railways. Since mine will go by rail, at least I might get it sooner then.

I don't believe that was everyone's experience, <fingers crossed>!
