New 2011 V6 vs used 2010 GT

My son has a 2011 V6 Mustang on order. MCA package, Black, Auto, Nav, Comfort Group. Sticker was $31k & change, but X Plan & rebates got it down to $27k. I can tell he really wants a V8, but doesn't want to drop $35k or so on a 2011 GT. (Plus, I don't want his 1st performance car to have 400+ hp!)
The dealer just took in on trade a black 2010 GT 5 spd with only 8k miles. (No Nav, no comfort grp) They started at $27,900 & I've got them down $2000 from that. $25,923.
What do you guys think?

You can get a brand new 2010 GT for that kind of money. No way I would give that much for a used one.

~24,500 out the door would be reasonable.

Rebates on the 2010's here are currently $2500, or $3500 if you use Ford Credit & their higher interest. We get X-Plan, which would take another $2500 or so off, depending on options. I'm thinking this used 2010 will still be 2 or 3 grand less than a new one. Plus I've checked around & there aren't many 2010 black GT's left. I plan on trying to get them down a grand or so more.

There are dealers around that are discounting 2010's by $6000 or more, you just have to look.

You may also have to travel a little to get it, that just makes it an adventure for you and your son.

But, if you want to pay more than it's worth then go ahead, if not then search here: www.cars.com

This is a pretty tough choice. The 2011 V6 is no slouch. Can't beat the sound of a V8 though, IMO.

Here in LA some dealers are offering $7000 off MSRP for remaining new 2010 GT's
(on a base GT that's $5,500 below INVOICE)

Would never pay $25k for a used 2010, when you get get base 2010 GT for around $22k

Shop around find a nicely equipped brand new 2010 GT for him and pay around $25-26k for it.

It'll be slightly faster than the 2011 V6 and sound much better.
The drawback is going to be insurance rates and gas mileage.

The 2011 V6 performs nearly as well and gets better gas mileage and will probably be 1/2 the insurance cost for a young male.

i saw a dealer offering 8k off with ford credit. even on base gt. my wife wants a sensible car but i got a 750 dollar rebate that is calling to me...hard to resist temptation just to go buy and deal with wife. 21600 otd for brand new gt...

The insurance on a 2011 V6 isn't cheap either. Trust me. It was only about a $50/month difference for the V6 versus the GT.

And FWIW, a local dealer was advertising their last 2010 Base GT, no options, for $20,995 in the paper.

It really depends what your son's priorities are for the car.

With the MCA on order, he is getting a car that is much nicer looking than the stock GT, with the options he wants and very similar performance.

With the 10 gt he would be getting an overall more powerful car, with more torque and a better sound-- but it won't be quite as nice looking as the MCA and will not have all of the options he wants.

It really comes down to what is a better fit for him, and only he would know best.

I paid $24K for my 2010 GT with 7400 miles on it, and I'm happy with the decision. I was previously considering the 2011 V6, but I like both the V8 and the lower price. (2011 V6 Premium with a few basic options would have been $28K.)

It sounds like the car you are looking at is very similar to mine -- I have the basic GT Premium with no options other than the Red Candy paint and the Comfort Package; I had the beat up the dealer real bad to get them to $24K but I still think that's about where it needs to be.

As a daily driver I think the 2011 V6 might be a little better, mainly due to fuel economy . . . but for me the tipper was the lower price, plus the sound and torque of the V8 engine should not be underestimated . . . I drive around with my windows open and radio off just to hear that sound . . . on my mixed highway/off-highway commute I get about 27 MPG . . . and for a car like this I think the manual transmission is the way to go.

He's 21, & I'm letting him make that decision for himself. I've given him every bit of advice I can think of. If he decides on the GT, then let the haggling begin. I'll wring every penny out of the dealership I can. Coming down $2000 yesterday was the "Mike Cate" price, based on the fact that between us, my in-laws, & our kids, we've bought 10 cars there. I know there's more wiggle room on the price.

For many that is half the price or less for the V6 over the GT.

That dealer is showing you very little respect. For a guy who has bought 10 cars from you, it appears they are still wanting to take you for a bit of a ride with that price on a used 2010. Unless of course, that 2010 was pretty much loaded with every option.

I guess I didn't really consider that. I'm going to be 23 in a couple months. My previously spotless driving record got ruined this past St. Patty's Day with a "wet reckless" conviction. I'm dumb and deserved it. But the points stay on my record for 7 years and um yeah...insurance on a
2011 GT for me, bare minimum liability only, would be $546/month. 2011 V6? $489/month. And I was just about to order a new GT back then. Yeah that's not happening...oh...ever now.

They don't even give you one chance to screw up. Have I learned my lesson and am I lucky to be alive? Yes of course. But, my life as a car enthusiast has effectively been ruined for at least the next 10 years, as unless I find some ridiculously paying job, there's no way I will be able to afford the car, the insurance, and still live. Unless I live IN it.

Why not a "new" leftover 2010 GT? My dealer just let me have one overnight, and I must say it is very nice. Difficult to tell power difference from my 5.0 in regular spirited driving, PLUS the exhaust has that just-right tone and volume my 2011's exhaust lacks. I'd have to say I wholeheartedly vote for the 2010 GT.

Hey man looks like you and I are in the EXACT position when it comes to insurance.

I'm 20 and have been driving since i was 16 and I had a car accident back in 08 when some guy T boned me while he was speeding through a intersection. It was ruled my fault since he had the right away. Anywho that was in my 05 V6 Mustang I eventually traded it in for a 08 GT and my insurance hoverd around 550 and has come down in the recent years. When i got my 2011 GT i dreaded talking to my insurance My current monthly was $410. I swaped my 08 for my 2011 and was only a $8 a month raise in my premium. So I'm at $418 for the monthly insurance. I've been with mercury but went through the broker AIS.

This car is worth every penny, I have a good paying job so i still have funds to live and pay my bills, but it would be well worth every dollar I have for my car. Considering our young age, might as well get the car YOU want NOW, rather then wait and start a family and have other responsibilities etc later down the road.
