Lava Red & Kona Blue paint shortage...

For what it's worth, this week's commodity restriction report for 2012 Mustangs shows that Ford will likely exhaust supplies of Lava Red and Kona Blue paint this week.

For anyone who is ordering a '12 in either of these colors, be prepared to choose a different color if your order is not scheduled by this Friday.

WOW! Hopefully I will just dodge that bullet, my car's scheduled build date is this thursday. Do you think this shortage will speed up the start of Job 2 production? Does this spell the death of Kona Blue?

Yeah, is Kona being replaced by Sonic completely, or will Kona come back later and be offered side-by-side with Sonic?

Either way, I'm glad I ordered when I did!!

Sonic Blue is likely going to replace Kona Blue, just as (ironically) Sterling Grey is looking to replace Lava Red (although I haven't confirmed this yet).

Hi Brian,
I ordered my Lava Red GT on 4/30 and haven't gotten scheduled yet... if I am forced to pick another color will that move my order to the back of the line regarding scheduling the build?
Thanks.

As long as your order isn't scheduled, a paint change won't put you to the back of the line. That only happens if more than one factory produces the vehicle in question and the paint change causes the build to have to go to a different factory. Mustangs are only built at Flat Rock, though, so you're safe.

Let's hope your Lava Red GT is scheduled before Ford runs out of Lava Red.

Thanks Brian, here's hoping. The only other colors I would have liked were Sterling Gray and Red Candy...
Appreciate it.

So I'm cool if I have a scheduled build date? Lava Red or bust!

Brian, knowing that Kona blue is a very common color on current Ford offerings, do you think it's going to be totally replaced, reallocated to fewer models, or will eventually be offered again once the logistical/supply issues are worked out? Is this still fallout from the Japan quake/tsunami that we're seeing?

EDIT - Just looked at something. Kona blue is currently available on 9 Ford/Lincoln vehicles, as well as the Mazda6. Plants are in parentheses. These are:

-Focus (Wayne)
-Mustang (AAI)
-Taurus (Chicago)
-Edge (Oakville)
-Explorer (Chicago)
-Flex (Oakville)
-MKX (Oakville)
-MKS (Chicago)
-MKT (Oakville)
-Mazda6 (AAI)

Quite the potential if Kona is axed from the lineup.

Jay, as your car is supposed to be built this week - and Ford says Lava Red supplies my become exhausted this week - you are probably safe, but there are never any guarantees.

Steve, it's still tsunami fallout. Japan has not recovered from the destruction yet, and will be many months before they are back up to speed.

I checked this week's commodities report for Kona Blue across the company to see how each model is affected. Here are all mentions of Kona Blue for this week...

Ford Edge -
At this time estimates show Kona Blue (L6) paints remain available but could become exhausted during
May 26 Scheduling.

Ford Focus -
Red Candy (U6), Kona Blue (L6) & Tuxedo Black (UH) paints have balanced out. Orders with these paints
will not be selected for scheduling.

Mustang -
At this time estimates show that Kona Blue (L6) & Lava Red (UZ) are available but may become exhausted
during May 26 Scheduling.

Lincoln MKX -
At this time estimates show Kona Blue (L6) paints remain available but could become exhausted during
May 26 Scheduling.

Thanks for the info Brian. I hope Kona isn't totally axed from the lineup, but it's still too early to tell.

Hey Brian,

What are the chances of if Ford runs out of Lava Red that they will allow "early" orders for Sterling Gray? And since the SG is a metallic paint too, is there a chance of them running out of that too?

Any restrictions on Mustangs in Candy Red?

Thanks!

Ford called to tell me, that my car went into the body shop yesterday 5/24/11. Does that improve my chances of receiving the Kona Blue that I ordered?

wonder if they have a supply of these colors for repairs and body shop work that may come up in the future?

So if my Boss has been scheduled for June 6th I should be fine? I don't have my window sticker but I'm expecting it later this week.

Sterling Gray has not been affected by all of this. SG is available on many Ford vehicles. Red Candy Tint (code RZ) appears to be good to go soon, but like SG, isn't ready for production just yet. Both are still on hold.

If your Kona Blue Boss has already been scheduled, then you're fine.
