All things Photography

A thread in the 11-14 section had kind of got off topic of sharing pics and more on the interest of photography itself.

I figure this could be a good gathering point for all things photography. Share your pictures/ask for constructive crit./tips/tricks/questions. You name it.

Great idea. I have way too much equipment to list. I will say most of it is Canon. Being a professional photographer I will answer any question that I can. My toys are Mustangs, Harleys, and Cameras... I need a cheap one.

What are some good settings when getting a moving shot of car? I've moved on to using manual mode a long time ago but I can never get a moving picture right since then. I recently took a picture of a Ford GT when it accelerated. I focused on the GT and for some reason the background was clear, and the car was a blur. I'd like to figure this out before I go to drag race sponsored by a Mustang club down here.
I'm using a Canon T1i. 18-55mm and 55-250mm lenses. I'll be using the 250 then.

I REALLY like your collection! a 60D with grips would be comfy and a nice weight. How do you like the sigma's compared to the canon's? they are a better price point no?

I still haven't figured out what will fit my Canon body as far as lenses other than Canon.

If it's a DSLR look into Tamron.

I would say Canon IQ is slightly better and auto focus is better than Sigma or Tamron, but the average person would never see the difference.

Tamron makes lenses for Canon along with Sigma. Tamron tend to make the lesser quality stuff but still decent. Then Sigma, Then canon.

there is a great website dedicated to canon stuff.

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/

There is a subforum that actually has a good running list of lenses made for canons along with user submitted photos taken with that lens.

I've never done a moving shot but from what i can guess. You need to shoot with a slower shutter speed. Focus on the car and don't move the camera at all when taking the picture. Make sure you change the focus point, thats what could have messed up the picture for you.

you're looking at maybe a 1/5 second shutter speed,

I was hoping the pro would answer this one, but let me take a shot. The result you describe must have come from keeping the camera still. That would give you a crisp background but the moving car would be a blur. If you want the opposite effect with the car crisp and the background blurred to give the sense of motion you need to pan - that is move the camera keeping it pointed at the car as it moves. If your shutter speed is too slow everything will be blurred. If it is too fast everything will be crisp. So you want shutter speed priority and I'm guessing about 1/125. You could also try it at 1/60. There is a sweet spot where the car is crisp but its wheels are not. I'm just not sure what that speed would be.
