Crazy, 850-HP Mustang Cobra Saved After Sitting in Storage for Years
Cool 1999 Mustang Cobra was once a magazine famous build, but now, it needs quite a bit of work.
Barn finds are all the rage these days, as all kinds of classic car hunters roam the country looking for old, neglected, abandoned cars on a regular basis. There are a ton of cool classics out there waiting to be discovered as well, most of them from the 1970s or earlier. However, this 1999 Mustang Cobra that was recently unearthed by Legit Street Cars is more of a modern barn find, and a very cool one at that, given the fact that it isn’t just some stock New Edge pony car by any means.
Amazingly, this 1999 Mustang Cobra has been sitting in storage for roughly 20 years, and has just 17k miles on the clock. But what makes it even more interesting is the fact that this car was featured in a number of magazines in its heyday, at least before the alternator apparently went bad and it was subsequently parked back in 2003. Amazingly, it only cost $8,000 to bring it home, but then again, the car obviously needs a ton of work after sitting for so long.
Regardless, it isn’t every day that we can purchase a magazine famous, 850 horsepower car for less than $10k – if ever, really. Thanks to a Vortech supercharger and a slew of additional mods, this SVT Cobra reportedly ran 10.3 second quarter-miles with ease during its time on the road, though it has also been treated to an automatic transmission for drag racing purposes. Regardless, that sort of performance was obviously good enough to attract the attention of multiple publications in the early 2000s, and this Mustang was featured in several of them.
After a little bit of tinkering around in the shop, our host wants to get the old Cobra running again, though he also notes that the 4.6-liter V8 needs to be taken apart and rebuilt, at a minimum. Even though it hasn’t traveled too many miles, the engine is a bit rusty inside after sitting outside in the elements for years, and as such, needs new rings and honed cylinders. Regardless, we’re certainly intrigued by this cool project, and we can’t wait to see it come back to life after seemingly disappearing decades ago.
