Bullitt Mustang Battles Surprisingly Competitive Genesis Sedan

By -

Bullitt gets a run for its money against the twin-turbo G70, which packs more punch than you might expect.

It really should come as no surprise to you that the iconic new Bullitt Mustang is faster than a Korean built four-door. However, the luxury division of Hyundai, called Genisis, is producing some pretty substantial figures. Therefore, it shouldn’t be too shocking if one pulls up next to you on the freeway and wants to tango.

In a recent video, The Fast Lane Car puts them head to head in a serious of tests. Across a drag race, 0-60 sprint and a road course test, the Korean sedan throws down with our beloved green hero.

“This car, while we’re comparing it against Detroit muscle…it’s designed to compete against the likes of a BMW M3,” said Paul Gerrard, the man piloting both vehicles on track (and formerly The Stig on Top Gear: America)

With a 365 Horsepower twin-turbo V6 under the hood, and an advertised 0-60 time of just 4.5 seconds, the Mustang has some stout competition.

First up is the drag race. As the flagger’s arms go down, the Bullitt immediately jumps out ahead of the Genesis. The Genesis begins creeping up on the Mustang. However, the race finishes with the Bullitt crossing the line first. Albeit not by much.

What does become immediately apparent, though, is which one is making a better noise.

“I’ll tell ya though, the one that wins based on best sound…” Said host Roman Mica, as he points at the Mustang from the driver seat of the Genesis.

With Gerrard behind the wheel, the Genesis manages a 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds, while the Bullitt takes 5.8 seconds. It’s not super surprising to see the hand-shifted Mustang slip here, as the Genesis is automatic with launch control.

After the 0-60 test comes the hot lap testing with Gerrard taking a full force lap in each vehicle. He was not impressed with the maintained stability control in track mode, though. Being a professional, he’d rather have it entirely under his control.

“It has a very old school Muscle Car feel to it, but kinda brought up to current standards,” Gerrard said, after his lap in the Bullitt, which was one second faster around the track than the G70 despite his complaints.

Ultimately, the Genesis is technically more capable and quicker on paper. However, when asked which car he’d buy, Gerrard picked the Genesis.

We have to side with Mica, however. While refinement and luxury can be nice, you just can’t beat a screaming Ford V8 and a manual transmission. We’d take the Mustang any day.
