Ford Not Set on Sync for Next Generation Mustang

Could the next Ford Mustang SYNC system include a new tech partnership with a company other than Microsoft? Who knows, but apparently you certainly can’t rule out the possibility.

Despite the fact that Sync has been Microsoft based since first introduced in 2007, the software giant isn’t a lock for Ford’s next gen infotainment system, according to a CNET report.

“Sync 1 and 2 was done with Microsoft but we are not married with them,” Ford managing director Pin van der Jagt told CNET, discussing Sync, which has been a heavily promoted as much improved for the new Mustang.  “For us, it’s a supplier, so every time we keep evaluating is it the right partner.”

The new Sync system in the 2015 Mustang features a new app component that can read notifications aloud. It also includes apps that provide access to real-time vehicle data such as speed, acceleration and location.

Exploring other software companies for the next gen system certainly makes sense.  Although Sync is popular, the system has had its issues over the years.  The Ford rep went on to address rumors of partnering with BlackBerry for Sync 3 as nothing more than speculation at this point.

“That is a rumor,” he said speaking to CNET at the mobile conference. “What we are in the process of, we are spec’ing out our requirements for the next generation: what we want to do, what features we want to add, what functionality.

“Then you go through a normal supply selection process. Those requirements for the next generation get sent out to everybody, to Microsoft, to Apple, to everybody, and they come back with offers… We go to evaluation and make a choice and that choice hasn’t been made yet.”

In short, it’s tough to say what lies down the road for Mustang when it comes to in-car connectivity. But if the features found in the 2015 model are any indication of what we can expect it could turn out to be pretty entertaining.
