Is the Mustang Really More Popular than the Camaro?

In case you missed it, the Mustang came in second to the Camaro in a recent report for most stolen car, which makes you wonder – how does it really measure up to its Chevy rival in terms of popularity?

Yup, I know – I’m chartering into some very dangerous territory on a Mustang fan site and theft numbers aren’t necessarily the best way to kick off a discussion about a car’s popularity – especially for owners of the vehicles.  But bare with me for a moment while I weigh in on a few comparisons.

For 2013, the Camaro is expected to beat the Mustang in overall sales despite the Ford pony car outselling its rival for the month of October.

As of November 1, Chevy had sold 70,484 Camaros for the year compared to 66,083 Mustangs sold; down 8.4 percent from the first ten months of 2012, according to reports.  And while some of the recent drop in Mustang sales might be attributed to buyers waiting for the new model, the numbers are still troubling for the Mustang.

The theft numbers, reported by the National Crime Bureau, indicated that for the 2010 to 2012 model years between January 2009 and December 2012 the Camaro had 1,509 reported thefts compared to 980 Mustangs.

On the other hand, when it comes to the world of social media, the Camaro doesn’t even come close to the Mustang’s popularity.

The official Ford Mustang Facebook page has more than 5.5 million likes compared to Camaro’s 3.4 million likes.

On Twitter, the official Mustang page shows more than 120,000 followers compared to a combined number of a little over 7,600 followers on four different Chevy Twitter pages including one in the U.K.

So, it can easily be argued that deciding which car is more popular is a matter of opinion.

Now, the question becomes – how will the new 2015 Mustang affect the popularity of the Ford pony car moving forward?
