Hennessey will be competing in the 2026 Mustang Cup in their brand new Mustang Dark Horse R racer, in two different classes.

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse R debuted as one of many new track-focused racing machines based on the latest S650-generation pony car, and is the sole entry in the one-make Mustang Cup and Mustang Challenge, to boot. The turnkey racer bridges the gap between the production Dark Horse and the GT3/GT4 models, giving prospective race car drivers the chance to work their way up the ranks. Now, a notable entity has purchased a Mustang Dark Horse R racer with those intentions in mind – Hennessey Performance.

In this video from the Texas-based outfit, founder/CEO John Hennessey and President Alex Royce discuss their latest purchase, as well as their plans for it in the future. Both are excited to actually drive this car hard on the track rather than keeping it as some collectible, competing in the Mustang Cup with both Hennessey and Royce behind the wheel – the former will participate in the Legends class, with the latter will drive it in the under-40 class.

This particular purchase makes a lot of sense given the tremendous growth Hennessey has enjoyed when it comes to modified Fords, in general – last year, over two-thirds of the 950 vehicles they built were Blue Oval models, in fact. In 2026, they expect that business to expand to over 1,000 Ford vehicles alone, with many of them being trucks. However, Hennessey Mustangs remain quite popular as well.

Here, Hennessey plans to wrap its new Mustang Dark Horse R and provide us with additional content as it winds along this journey, which is just one component in a pyramid of racing series that allows drivers to progress from the entry-level Mustang Cup up to the more competitive Mustang Challenge, and perhaps even IMSA racing. Hennessey is quite excited about Ford’s motorsports push, and that was a driving factor in this decision as well.

We also get to see Hennessey wring out its latest purchase on the track, ripping off some burnouts and donuts for show. It’s an entertaining intro to what promises to be an exciting series, all in a car that starts out at a pretty reasonable for a purpose-built race car $145k.
