This 2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R Is No Garage Queen
The previous owner of this rare 2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R racked up 15k miles on the track alone, just like it was designed to do.
For as long as we can remember, there are two distinct types of automotive enthusiasts – those that want to preserve special, rare cars by stashing them away and not driving them, and folks that believe all cars should be driven – because that’s what they were built for, right? This intense debate has gone on forever, and figures to do so, well, forever, because we just can’t seem to find much consensus there. Regardless, there is something satisfying about seeing the ultra-cool 2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R out on the track, where it belongs.
This 2000 Ford Mustang Cobra R was recently featured in a video from the YouTube channel Donut, and it indeed has racked up a significant 15,000 miles – on the track alone. It was designed specifically for that purpose, as most are well aware, as it’s equipped with things like a fuel cell, side-exit exhaust – and it’s also not equipped with things that one doesn’t need to go faster at the track, all in the name of weight reduction – stuff like a radio, air conditioning, or a rear seat.
Only offered in Performance Red, the 2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R is easy to distinguish from a regular Cobra thanks to its unique front fascia with a huge splitter, as well as its high-mount rear wing and wheels, covering a set of 13-inch Brembo brakes with four-piston calipers up front. Suspension upgrades included Bilstein dampers and an IRS setup, enabling the Cobra R to pull an impressive 1.02g on the skidpad.
To move it quickly around the track, this particular model came equipped with a naturally-aspirated version of the 5.4-liter V8, which churned out a healthy for the time 385 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque, flowing to the rear wheels via a Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission. Reaching upwards of 175 mph, the Cobra R was the fastest factory Mustang of its time, and still holds up by today’s lofty standards.
All of this sounds great, of course, but only 300 examples of the 2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R were produced in total, making it a rare, coveted, and quite valuable machine in the eyes of collectors. The previous owner of this one – Bruce of Full Tilt Boogie fame – bought it back in 2002 when it had just 17 miles on the clock, and proceeded to drive the heck out of it on the track, even going to far as to develop his own bushings to replace the weak factory rubber pieces while adding a roll cage and racing seats.
While such things are obviously turn-offs to collectors, the new owner – Nathan – was enamored with this car, and for good reason. Where else can you buy a 2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R that’s been driven, and not have to worry about continuing to drive and enjoy it as Ford intended, after all?
