1993 Ford Saleen Mustang SC Convertible

Most expensive Fox Body ever? This 1993 Ford Saleen Mustang SC Convertible is ultra-rare, but is it really worth $200K?

The car market right now for even regular cars is insane. The collector car market is insane with a cherry on top. Consider this. A Fox Body Mustang is about to sell for north of $200K. You could have a new GT500, an F-150 Raptor, and a Bronco for what this 1993 Mustang would cost you. But to be fair this is not just any 1993 Mustang. It is a Saleen Mustang. And it is not just any Saleen Mustang either. This is a Ford Saleen Mustang SC Convertible. Only THREE were made in 1993. This one was purchased brand new by the current owner. It has only 11,000 miles on it and some of the best documentation that you will ever see.

And it is now up for sale on the auction site Bring a Trailer. The current bid as of this writing is $203,000. That is not a typo. This car will cost you the equivalent of about four brand new Mach 1 Mustangs. Is it really worth that much? Well, as they say the true worth of something is what someone is willing to pay for it. And right now someone is willing to pay over 200 grand for this car, so yes it is worth it. But why?

Saleen

The original window sticker is part of the documentation that comes with this car. It shows that the original owner paid $48,585 for it. Adjusted for inflation that is about $97,000 in 2022 money. So, it was not an inexpensive car when new. And what did you get for the money? Well, you got a very exclusive car. Only three of these were made that year. The famous 5.0L V8 was modified by Saleen with a Vortech supercharger, tubular headers and a dual exhaust. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Tremec five-speed manual transmission and a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential.  Other Saleen modifications include Saleen-branded Alcon four-piston calipers over slotted two-piece rotors up front. And the suspension on this car came with a Quad-shock rear suspension, progressive-rate lowering springs, polyurethane sway bar bushings, Racecraft subframe connectors, and strut tower and chassis braces.

In addition to all the engine, and suspension upgrades Saleen also gave the interior a makeover. Inside you will find Recaro adjustable bucket seats trimmed in black leather with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpets. The seat backs feature “Saleen by Recaro” embroidery. The car also has air conditioning, a Hurst shifter, cruise control, an Alpine CD stereo, and a serialized Saleen plaque ahead of the shifter.  There is Saleen branded instrumentation that includes a 200-mph speedometer.

Why So Special?

Serial number 3

It is exceedingly rare. The car has been owned by the same guy since day one. And the amount of documentation that comes with the car is overwhelming. But there are even more factors that contribute to bidders going gaga over this thing. There is also Steve Saleen’s autograph visible on the radiator support. Some parts had to be replaced over the years, such as the hood. However, all the original parts are still with the car and included with the sale. The owner of this car did everything he could to keep the value on this car as high as possible, while still enjoying it at least a little bit.

Worth the Price?

If you are a well-heeled Mustang aficionado, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a car like this. Comments on the auction seem to be fairly evenly split. Half the folks commenting think the current bidders have lost their mind. No Fox Body Mustang should be worth this kind of money. But on the other side of the aisle are the folks that feel this 1993 Ford Saleen Mustang SC Convertible should without question be worth big money. What do you think?
