Mustang GT Leaves Youtubers in Awe! (Video)
Throttle House pits pure raw horsepower against plush, all-wheel-drive performance. American muscle wins.
The view above comes to us from the Throttle House Youtube channel and it features a head-to-head comparison between the 2019 Ford Mustang GT and the 2019 Genesis G70. Comparing a Korean luxury sedan to an American muscle car might seem strange, but in this video, the two reviewers are trying to decide whether or not an automotive enthusiast would pick the twin-turbo sedan over the V8 fastback.
The video begins with a short video where host James Engelsman is having a nightmare in which a woman named Stephanie is nagging him about growing up and getting a responsible vehicle. Meanwhile, friend and fellow host Thomas Holland haunts the dream, insisting the Engelsman get something that is fun to drive.
Drive Round 1
After the short introduction, the two Throttle House hosts take to the road in the Genesis G70 and the Mustang GT. Engelsman is in the sedan and Holland is in the Mustang, which makes sense once they start sharing their views on both cars.
As you likely know, the Mustang GT is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 with 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, with the power being sent to the rear wheels by means of a proper 6-speed manual transmission. The Genesis is powered by a 3.3-liter twin turbocharged V6 that packs 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent by a standard automatic transmission to all four wheels via an advanced all-wheel-drive system, but the rear-drive-based chassis provides the rear-wheel-drive feel with the support of all-wheel-drive.
Early on, Holland praises the Mustang, calling is brash and aggressive while going so far as to call it “one of the best driver’s cars on sale today”. Meanwhile, Engelsman points out that the G70’s all-wheel-drive system allows the sedan to use all of the power without any concern of grip, stating that it is “certified fast, absolutely”.
Holland goes on to point out that the 2019 Mustang GT is far more advanced than pony cars in the past with features like independent rear suspension and magnetic dampers, but it is still a car that requires you to pay attention while you are behind the wheel. He insists that Mustang buyers should get the manual transmission for the total experience, but with any transmission, is it a car that is well-balanced and able to be driven fast.
Meanwhile, Engelsman points out that Sport Mode in the Genesis tightens the seat bolsters up, stating that “it makes me feel like my mum is hugging me”. Jokes aside, the G70 appears to accelerate well while offering the kind of cabin that you would expect from a luxury sedan, but Engelsman calls the exterior design generic.
Meanwhile Holland loves the Mustang GT, but he doesn’t love the plastic and leather inside, pointing out that it falls short of some higher-end sports coupes. He thinks that the Recaros aren’t all that comfortable and the rear seat is too small.
Driver Switch
For the second half of the video review, Engelsman gets into the Mustang while Holland climbs into the driver’s seat of the G70. Engelsman immediately enjoys the drive of the Ford, praising the braking and acceleration of the pony car while also complaining about the look of the interior with plastic and “faux carbon fiber” on the dash. He also points out that the Mustang it a cop magnet, but it provides an incredible rush.
At that point, Engelsman makes what might be the best comment of the review:
“If you dont like rushes, Genesis; if you like rushes, Mustang.”
He will later pick the G70, so it seems that he doesn’t enjoy rushes, although he proclaims that the Mustang GT is a “celebration of freedom mixed with a little bit of anarchy”.
Meanwhile, Holland crushes on the plush interior of the Genesis, complementing the ride quality, handling and steering of the G70. He enjoys the acceleration on a hard pull, but in the end, he picks the pony car.
