How To Make A 2018 Mustang GT Breathe Better

By -

The stock 2018 Mustang is a strong performer from the factory, But what if you want more power and a better intake sound?

The 2018 Mustang GT is Ford’s fastest GT pony car ever. It has 460 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. The new GT also blasts to 60 in under four seconds with the new 10-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the 2018 model has many interior improvements, including a new LCD dash display. The new dash offers the ability to customize the gauge cluster layout. The only downside is that the LCD display is only available with the premium package.

Under the hood, the 5.0 Coyote V8 has had an increase in bore by removing the cylinder liners and adding a spray on coating. The engineers at Ford also made an increase in the motor’s compression, from 11:1 up to 12:1.

The 5.0 V8’s redline is now up to 7,500 rpm, up 500 over the 2017 GT. Those additional rpms let the V8 scream as you wring it out to redline. All of these improvements are great, but as we know, the factory is leaving some performance on the table.

One of the great (and easy) ways to increase performance and sound on your 2018 Mustang is a cold air intake. The factory plastic intake box is a bit of an eyesore and is more restrictive than an aftermarket intake. Additionally, the factory intake uses a sound tube to pump intake noise into the cabin, which is kind of #fakenews. Adding a cold air intake will give you all the noise of the sound tube with the benefit of more performance.

In this video, YouTube channel CJ Pony Parts takes us through the process of installing a performance cold air intake system. One thing to remember is adding an intake may require additional tuning to give the maximum power from the modification.
