Camaro SS Gets Two Perfect Launches, Still Loses to 2019 Mustang GT
We’re always happy to see a Mustang throw down against a Camaro, especially when the Mustang is nearly a full second faster.
Like most Mustang people, we spend a lot of time comparing our quarter mile times against Camaro owners. This video, posted to Youtube by the appropriately-named Wheels channel, gives us a double dose of Camaro-whoopin’ action.
The drag race pits a 2019 Mustang GT against a sixth-gen Camaro SS. Both cars are black on black, and, from reading the spec sheets, would appear to be relatively evenly matched, assuming both cars are stock. It’s a driver’s race.
In the first race, the Camaro clearly gets the holeshot. The Mustang may have been snoozing at the light, but it still pulls away from the Camaro easily. At the end of the quarter-mile, the numbers tell the story. The Mustang GT ran a 12.65 to the Camaro’s 13.55 – almost a full second faster.
The Camaro SS appears to be a 1LE package car, which comes with a six-speed manual and 3.91 rear gears. The Mustang sounds like it could be equipped with the 10-speed automatic transmission.
The rematch is more of the same. The Camaro appears to get an even cleaner launch, but once again, the Mustang begins to pull away quickly. The Mustang runs exactly one tenth of a second quicker than its last run, at 12.55, while the Camaro runs nearly the exact same time – a 13.54. These cars are nothing if not consistent.
Other auto publications have tested the sixth-gen Camaro SS 1LE, and have been able to get quarter-mile times as low as 12.4 out of it. Thus, the issue is definitely with the driver, not the car. Nonetheless, the Mustang won both races, and we can feel good about that.
The final race in the video has us seeing double. This time, the 2019 Mustang GT’s competition is….another Mustang! This one is a 2017 GT, also black on black. It even has the same wheels as the 2019!
The two cars look and sound almost identical. When the green light flashes on, it’s all over for the GT, bucking hard from a botched launch. The 2017, which appears to have a six-speed manual) pulls away and never looks back.
The 2017 finishes up with a 12.60, while the 2019 ends up with a disappointing 15.61. Had the 2019 run a similar time to its performance against the Camaro, it would have been an exceptionally close race indeed.
