2018 Ford Mustang: Both Cheaper and More Expensive

2018 Ford Mustang GT and EcoBoost pricing

It seems that getting more horsepower means you also get a bigger bill while smaller might mean a better value.

The new Mustang is exciting for a whole mess of reasons: a refined design, a new 10-speed transmission, and a big power bump to 460 hell-raising horsepower in the V8. Put all that together with the new Performance Package, and Ford says the Mustang GT will rocket itself to 60 mph in less than four seconds. That’s Porsche-beating quickness.

But nothing is as free it seems. Ford just announced pricing for the newest muscle-car king, and it’s not great news. The Mustang GT now starts at $35,095, making it more than $2,000 pricier than last year’s model. Adding the Performance Pack tacks another $4,000 on top of that. Things get even more expensive if you decide you want to live that topless life. Switching from a coupe to a convertible brings with it a $5,500 premium.

That means spending more than $50,000 on a Mustang GT is now a pretty easy thing to do.

On the other end of the scale, all of you turbo fanatics actually get a small price break. The 2018 EcoBoost Mustang is $415 cheaper than the 2017 model. It’s not much, but every bit helps. The price drop is even more welcome when you hear that you get an extra 30 lb-ft of torque in 2018 also. Horsepower doesn’t change, though.

For those of you looking for a bargain back-road rocket, the EcoBoost may now be a new performance sweet-spot. The price drop and increased torque are all great, but 2018 also brings the option to add MagneRide dampers to any ‘Stang, including the EcoBoost. You know, the incredible suspension from the Shelby GT350?

So now, buyers can get the best handling possible regardless of engine choice. For those who thrive in the autocross world, this could be a perfect machine. Just imagine how good 350 lb-ft of torque to launch you out of corner will pair with one of the most advanced suspensions systems available in a production car.

We. Can’t. Wait.
