Mickey thompson or Michelin

My appointment with the tire installer is next Saturday, 7/25. I need to order the tires this weekend. I am looking at getting either the MT Street Comp tire in 275/35/20 and 305/35/20, or the Michelin PSS in 275/35/20 and 305/30/20. The Michelin tires are almost twice the cost of the MT tires. Are the Michelins actually twice as good as the MT tires? My GT is a daily driver and will not see any kind of track duty. I am currently using Nitto 555 in 255/35/20 and 285/30/20.

If this is for a DD I would choose neither. I would and have the Cooper Zeons. Great tires.

In my expereince the coopers suck.

Terrible road noise. All I could hear was "whomp whomp whomp" that sped up and down with the car.

The tires guys told me it was "harmonic resonance" .... whatever.


When these Tires go. I am getting Michelins.

I am running exactly the MT setup you mention. I have no problem with them at all. good traction, low noise. Haven't had much rain this year so i can't really speak to their rain ability, nor cold weather.

Agreed. Don't spend the money on the Pilot SS unless you plan to use them. If the car hardly ever sees 0.7g in a corner then there is no point.

They use to. I have the Zeons and the CTS on my other cars. No road Noise at all. There a alot of people running them on this Forum. If you are looking for a really quite tire look at the Michelin. I use to buy Michline but they are almost twice the cost of the competition now.

I have the Cooper Zeons and I dont have road noise. Pretty good summer tire for the money, around $200 each. And I think that Cooper makes the MT's. They provide good dry and wet weather traction.

The PSS are an awesome tire, and they seem to be the tire everyone compares to.

Hey Southern Stang, how long have you had your Coopers, and have they always had the noise or are they near the end of their life? I think I have around 8k on mine and I havent had any noise issues. I have had tires like that and it is irritating.

I just put the Michelin Pilot Super Sports on mine at 15,000 miles since the Pirellis gave up the ghost at that mark. I have almost 3,700 on them now so I cant speak on wear yet. They are definitely pricey but they handle great, ride smooth and sound super quiet. They absolutely stick the car wherever it wants to go, even in the wet. I'm hoping they wear a little better than the Pirellis too considering the cost.

I know; I read a lot of the reviews before deciding to get the MT. I might still get the Michelin for my BMW 540 when I get new tires for it next year. A set for my bimmer runs 759. Much easier to shallow than the 1,400 for the Mustang size.

I think you'll do fine with the MTs. The MPSS are likely better at the limits but with many things in the car hobby, the % improvement doesn't match the % increase in cost. Bang:buck, I'd put my money on the MTs.

Regardless, MTs will almost certainly be a nice improvement over stock. Please let us know what you think!

I had the Coopers on my 2010 GT. I had them for about 6 months before I traded the GT in on my wife Flex.

I dont know if I just got a bad set or there is a differnce between wheel sizes (The '10 had 18" rims) but I am very picky about noises in the cabin. I hear something and just cant help but focus in on it. The coopers drove me almost as nuttly as the stock tires did after 25k miles.

I still have a good amount of tread left, and I"m running a 255/40/19 on my stock 19x8.5 wheels, dont know if that makes any difference? Noisy tires are no fun.

I'm so glad we have the M/T street comp tires, as an option for these cars. I like the price, the look, the feel, and they seem to be holding up nicely after 8k miles.

The M/T's are a great tire if you're on a budget. But you can't beat the Michelin PSS for the best all round performance. I love the PSS on my GT500.

Had the Michelin PSS and they were ok. No complaints about their traction and handling.
