I now have the imfamous 5.0 engine tick @ 19,650 miles

I have a 2012 Mustang GT and over the weekend I noticed that I now have the infamous 5.0 engine tick. I bought this car new back in Dec of 2011, and it only has 19,650 miles on it now.

I live in NC and its been over 90 degrees for the last week, and I have been running the A/C which I don't normally do. I have a very noticeable engine tick when the car is warm, and the A/C is on. It seems to get less severe when I turn off the A/C. I can sit in the car and turn the A/C on and off and here the tick start and stop.

Could this be related to TSB 12-8-14 for the A/C compressor drive stretchy belt? Has anyone else had this same problem, and did the TSB actually fix your issue?

The 5.0 is does not run as quite as my old 4.6 did, but this definitely doesn't seem normal.

Here is the video of what I am experiencing.

wow that's a pretty loud tick. Sorry to hear. You've done all the regular maintenance, etc? And this just started?

Yes, I change the oil every 6 months even though I never get the the mileage, since I am only 5 miles from work. I hardly even run the A/C and just keep the windows down. The temp is usually very nice here in NC. It seems odd that it goes away almost instantly when I turn off the A/C, which leads me to believe it's the issue outlined in TSB 12-8-14.

Certainly sounds like you have the AC belt issue. I assume there is no actual danger...just a very annoying noise.

^ so if that's the case, it's a no-cost, no worry fix for the OP, correct?

I hope so. I'm assuming this would be covered under the 5yr/60,000 mile power train warranty. I'm already past the 3 year.

I just hate going to the dealer for anything, especially since I don't live near the dealer I bought the car from.

Hopefully they fix it for you. One thing I wonder about when reading the TSB...why do they have to reflash the computer?

If it's the belt it will sound like it's throwing a rod out of the passengers side of the block.

Interesting though that it stops when the AC is switched off in the video.
The tsb sure looks like it is for his issue.

OP, let us all know the resolution (if any) to this.
Very curious in case mine develops it in the future.

My car started doing this a couple weeks after the first oil change. I was at 6500 miles when it started. Now at 8000, I've decided to take it in to the dealer. My car does it with the AC turned off, so I'm assuming that's the "you need a new engine" tick.

Its really unfortunate to see so many of your GT owners have this issue. There is NOTHING worse that to drive a really nice car and get hit with these annoyances.

Mine does it will the A/C off, but about once every 30 seconds. It is 10x worse with the A/C on at idle. If i rev it up slightly it can be heard without the A/C on, but then gets drowned out by the exhaust. At the very end of my video it does it again.

Ive been doing some more searching and found that there are those who had this exact same issues, and it was solved by the new timing cover, and A/C belt replacement.

Its says Boss 302 in the title, but many GT owners commented on there similar issues and resolutions.

I would have thought Ford would have had this problem 'fixed' by 2014 I wonder if any of the 2015's will have the 'tick'...............

Yes!! That's pretty much exactly what mine does...only I never run the AC so I can't verify if mine gets worse with the AC running....I will give it a shot this weekend.

So...you're not alone!

Please keep us posted. Mine has been doing this for a while and I made sure my dealership got this in my "record" in case it failed around the time the warranty was up...I wanted it documented.

Yep. You'd think.

On the other hand, the hood corrosion has been a problem since at least 2005 and 2014s are documented has stil having this problem.

This is when you remember that you have a Ford.

My 2011 did it with the a/c on or off. The tech cut the stretchy belt off
and no more noise.

What was the intent of the stretchy belt versus a conventional idler/tensioner setup? Reduce parasitic losses?

Mine also does it with the AC off...but not as much as the OPs does it wth the AC on.

I have an appointment (next week) to get it checked out.

That sounds plausible...I'm curious too.
