One of just a few hundred produced, this well-documented 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 figures to garner big bucks at auction.

All pony car fans worth their salt already know that the 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 is a truly special machine, a car that was built in scant quantities for NASCAR homologation purposes. These days, the two-year-only Boss 429 is widely considered to be among the greatest muscle cars ever built – if not the greatest – and as such, is worth a small fortune. Every once in a while, we see a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 pop up for auction, and that’s once again set to be the case at Mecum’s Harrisburg, Pennsylvania sale later this month.

This particular 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 is KK (Kar Kraft) number 1570, and as one of around 857 such cars produced in that particular model year, is certainly a rare and very special machine. Finished in white with a black interior, it’s also nicely documented with the original window sticker, broadcast sheets, and warranty card, along with judging forms from the various prestigious events that it has participated in over the years.

Of course, the most notable thing about the 1969 Boss 429 is its engine, the 429 cubic-inch V8 stuffed in the pony car with one sole purpose in mind – to make it eligible for use in NASCAR competition in a time when manufacturers were desperately jockeying for position in that particular racing series. The massive powerplant utilized parts such as aluminum heads, an aluminum high-rise intake, and a 735 cfm Holley carb to generate a factory rating of 375 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, though those numbers were a tad underrated.

Sending power to the rear wheels via a Toploader four-speed manual transmission and a traction-lock differential with 3.90 rear gears, the Boss 429 was obviously one heck of a formidable machine on the streets – not only the track. It also looked a lot like the Boss 302 on the outside, giving it a bit of sleeper appeal, save for the rather large, fully-functional hood scoop and matte black chin spoiler, which were dead giveaways.

Regardless, the 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 has cemented its status as one of the all-time greats, and we expect this one to rake in a pretty penny at auction, given its stellar condition and documentation. After all, these amazing machines don’t exactly grow on trees, and collector’s aren’t likely to ever give them the cold shoulder, either.
