Team Shelby Joins Black Flag Cancer Derby Divas at 2021 Relay for Life
As the charitable event enters its third year, Team Shelby will be on hand to help raise some much-needed funds.
With its third annual Relay for Life coming up on Saturday, October 9 at Irwindale Speedway, the Southern California Black Flag Cancer Derby Divas were already set to raise a significant amount of money to help an important cause – the American Cancer Society. Now, however, Team Shelby is joining the crew of lady demolition derby drivers and all-around automotive enthusiasts, and the company’s International Director, Tracey Smith, will even drive in the demolition derby on the all-female team.
“Automotive legend Carroll Shelby was deeply committed to supporting charitable foundations and that is a cornerstone of the car club he founded,” Smith said. “Robert Rice and Cheryl Hyland, who are very active in the Shelby community, have been competing in motorsports for many years. We were inspired by their success in using grassroots racing events to raise awareness and money for the battle against cancer. I’m excited to compete in my first demolition derby as one of the Black Flag Cancer Derby Divas. This weekend, Shelby’s passion for motorsports and charity will collide at Irwindale Speedway in So Cal.”
The Black Flag Cancer Derby Divas have only been around since 2019, but they’ve been staunch supporters of the American Cancer Society since then. The creators of this group – Rice and Hyland – have been staples in the SoCal motorsports scene for decades, but Rice also works for Carrol Shelby International, so he has strong ties to Team Shelby and Shelby American, too.
At this year’s Relay for Life, members of the demolition derby team will be on hand to sign autographs before hitting the track and taking both cancer fighters and survivors on parade laps before a series of races promise some high octane thrills.
“It will be a full night of safe and affordable family fun at So Cal’s premier motorsports facility,” Hyland said. “In addition to the Derby Diva’s Demolition Derby, the event will include NASCAR divisions like YouRaceLA Spec Racers, INEX Legend Cars, Street Stocks, Enduros, Mini Stocks, and Bandos. I look forward to seeing everyone at Irwindale Speedway!”
Gates for the 2021 Black Flag Cancer Derby Divas Relay for Life open at 4 pm, and the action kicks off at 7 pm. Tickets for this charitable event can be purchased here.
