Shelby GT500 Squeaks By 847-HP Whipple Mustang in Drag Race
Predator-bound Shelby GT500 puts all its ponies to work against renowned British tuner Clive Sutton’s supercharged Coyote.
Matt Watson is back with yet another exciting drag race. In one of carwow‘s recent webisodes, A Ford Shelby GT500 competes against its evil twin, tuned across the pond. A supercharged 5.2-liter V8 sits under the hood of the Shelby GT500. The powerplant is good for 760 HP of maximum power and 625 lb-ft of peak torque. A dual-clutch 7-speed gearbox sends the power to the rear wheels.
Ford’s flagship pony car raced against a souped-up Mustang GT called CS850 GT, which comes from the stables of a renowned British tuner. Clive Sutton, a UK-based importer, is responsible for this menacing creation.
The powerplant of the sports car now churns out 859 HP of power. A six-speed manual gearbox comes mated to the 5.0-liter V8 of Clive Sutton CS850 GT Mustang and sends power to the rear wheels. Prices of the CS850 GT start at $154,392.
Watson shared his thoughts on the two cars. “It (GT500) is rather unique, not as unique as that (CS850 GT) one, though. You see, that has a 5.0-liter V8, but Sutton’s team has worked on it. They fitted a supercharger. He further added, “loads of other bits and pieces, brakes suspension, carbon fiber bits, so much to it.”

CS850 GT Carbon Fiber Upgrades
The Clive Sutton tuned powerplant also produces 664 lb-ft of peak torque courtesy of a Whipple supercharger. After a quick soundcheck, the two cars rolled up next to one another at the starting line with Matt Watson behind the wheel of the Shelby GT500.
Initially, the 859 HP Mustang GT took the lead, which it lost to the Shelby GT500 because of poor traction and the superior DCT gearbox. The CS850 GT completed the quarter-mile run in 12.2 seconds right after the Shelby GT500, which was 0.4 seconds faster. The Shelby GT500 proved superior during the rolling race from 50 MPH and was the first to cross the half-mile mark.
“I can just see on the gear change like you just can’t change as fast as a dual-clutch automatic, can you!” said Watson. He further added,” I won everything apart from the um warming up the tires.” The stock GT500 brakes also performed better during the final brake test, establishing itself as the superior muscle car in all three races.
