Lightly-modded Mustang Tramples 2019 Camaro ZL1

By -

Despite facing tremendous odds, a bolt-on 2013 Mustang still proves too much for a brand new Camaro ZL1.

By all accounts, the new Camaro is a pretty capable machine. If you can look past that gaudy front end only a mother could love, that is. Otherwise, opting for the ZL1 package nets you a supercharged, 650 hp 6.2-liter V8 mounted in a stiff chassis. Certainly something that should be capable of outrunning an S197 Mustang, right? Even if it has a few bolt ons? Well, maybe not.

In this video from vlogger and YouTuber Mustang Lifestyle, we get to see this seemingly one-sided matchup take place on the streets. In, of all places, a barely 40-degree day in Florida. Which is exactly the type of weather that would also favor a blown car. Even the owner of another Mustang doesn’t sound too confident in his chances. “I’m going to race that,” he says. “But I’m going to get my ass walked.”

When our host tells the S197 Mustang owner that the Camaro “wants the sauce,” he doesn’t sound too confident either. “The sauce from the Whipple,” he says. “Not from this slow ass thing.” He claims to “only” have about 390 hp, which when combined with cold street tires, doesn’t seem like a winning combination. But as we’ve seen many times before, you can’t count out a bolt-on Mustang.

Camaro ZL1

Despite only having an off-road x-pipe, tune, and JLT intake, this S197 Mustang still trips the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds at 117 mph, however. But that’s still way off the Camaro’s 11.5 best. But with the hit, the Ford still manages to walk away from the new, automatic transmission Camaro. An impressive feat, indeed. And proof that even without a lot of work, an old ‘Stang can still run with a new Camaro on the street.
