#TBT Retro Review: 2000 Mustang Cobra R

If it seems unusual to be talking about the Cobra R in terms of “retro,” as MotorWeek does so well in the video below. But bear in mind, it has now reached the age of 15-years-old. Pretty impressive then to think of how the Mustang has evolved in two generations since, but even more impressive to see what it was capable of.

While not the first Mustang to wear the R badge, it did introduce a few firsts, such as independent rear suspension adopted, but slightly changed from the SVT Cobra. And of course one unmistakable visual element: that wing!

At the time, Camaro had quite literally nothing to offer in comparative performance, and the remaining ammo in GM’s arsenal was called the Z06.

The Cobra’s performance is still impressive all these years on. 0-60 in 4.7 seconds, and equal numbers in measure of horsepower and torque at 385. Such a shame then that so few were produced. I suppose some performance has to remain exclusive.

With exclusivity comes a price, and in 2000 that price started at $54,995, a good investment then if you’re looking to sell one now. Prices seem to have stayed the same, and if anything have inflated. Could this be one of those “If I’d Only Bought It Then” type of cars?
