Since we first took notice of this Mustang, nicknamed “Shorty,” back in August, we can’t say we’re surprised she’s expected to fetch a pretty penny at auction.

The custom two-seater, which has a history as rich as the Mustang nameplate itself, is about as rare and coveted as they come in the world of American muscle cars. So coveted, that the concept spent most of its life in hiding from Ford Motor Co., which is why experts predict that it could go for as high as $600,000 when it crosses the block this March at a Florida auction, according to a CarBuzz.com report.

Powered by a Ford 302 V8, the story of “Shorty” dates back more than 46 years. First developed as a project car, Ford eventually decided they wanted to crush the Mustang to keep it out of the public, which prompted one of the car’s designers to “hide” the vehicle.

Some time later the “Shorty” Mustang resurfaced and was eventually bought by a private collector, who now stands to make a lot of money from owning this rare piece of American history.
