One of One: The Only 1967 Shelby GT500 Convertible
What was once believed to be a prototype convertible turned out to be the real deal.
If you’re in for a good read, you’ll want to check out Mustang 360‘s incredible story of how one GT500 slipped through the cracks, and almost needed to prove its own existence.
The investigative angles into this story would put 60 Minutes to shame. They uncover production runs, Shelby’s financial situation, Hertz doing Ford a big favor, and even documented meetings between Ford executives.
Origins of this car are quite unique, given that it wears only a few visual queues from the 1967 model. But it was photographed prolifically for 1968 press kits. There’s more to that story, though. Fiberglass provider A.O. Smith hadn’t supplied the kits that would be used on 1968 models at this time, so for the photographs, this GT500 was upgraded to 1968 specs, along with just one other car.

Furthermore, since it was started at a Ford production plant, it stands as the only 1967 Mustang to be equipped from the factory with a 428-cubic-inch engine. On top of that, it’s the only convertible muscle/pony car to get a dual-quad carb and factory air conditioning.
There’s far more details to the story, so it’s worth taking some time to sit down and read it. You’ll be fascinated to find out how this rare car came to be, and how it almost never happened in the first place. So check it out, then let us know what you think!
