Next-gen Mustang Will Stick Around a Little Longer
Ford currently plans on sticking with the upcoming seventh-generation Mustang through 2030.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a tremendous negative effect on the economy—most notably in the automotive industry. Several new product launches have been postponed, while some planned models have been cancelled indefinitely.
We’re happy to report that the next Ford Mustang is still scheduled to go on sale for the 2022 model year, according to Motor1. That’s great news for Stang fans. While the pony car is currently the only actual car that Ford sells, it’s clear that they still see it as an important part of the brand’s image.
However, there is indeed a change in plans for the next Mustang. Instead of a shorter, six-year lifespan for the next Stang, Ford plans on mimicking the current model’s eight-year lifespan. That means that the next model will stick around until 2030 instead of 2028. Ford is also planning on a major facelift (and the likely addition of some serious performance models) in 2025.
Major Commitment
This is great news for fans, as it more or less guarantees that Ford is committed to the Stang for another decade at the bare minimum. That’s a major commitment in this day and age. We live in an uncertain world, and even if things were going great, the buying public seems to prefer crossovers to cars. We’re glad that the Mustang can weather the storm.
Speaking of SUVs and crossovers, the Mustang will share its next platform with the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs. We expect that the next Mustang will probably grow in size slightly, and Motor1 feels the same way.
Automotive News reports that annual volume is expected to be around 100,000 cars, split about 80/20 between coupes and convertibles. With the reported discontinuation of the Camaro around the time the new Mustang bows in 2022, it’s likely that many former Camaro owners will end up behind the wheel of a Mustang.
Personally, we don’t mind that the forthcoming 7th generation Mustang will stick around longer. Ford has already stated that they will give it a nice mid-cycle update to keep it fresh. Personally, we’re just happy that the Mustang will be around for another ten years at the very least.
