New Mustang Face Inspired by Star Wars
Darth Vader’s menacing Star Wars mask inspired the new Mustang’s face.
We’ve heard some pretty interesting behind-the-scenes stories about some of the inspirations that have driven the design of the Mustang over the years. But this one definitely took us a little off guard.
Or maybe the fact that the 2018 Ford Mustang was inspired by Darth Vader is something we should have picked up on right away.
What, you don’t see it?
Well, apparently, the towering nemesis of the Galactic Rebellion played a major role in the look of the new model, as detailed in an AutoBlog report. More specifically, it was Vader’s mask that became a tool of inspiration for the team.

Ford’s design manager, Melvin Betancourt, explains:
“When we were designing the new 2018 Mustang, the team wanted to make the new model look more aggressive, and one place where we found inspiration was one of the most famous screenplay villains of all time. The angled nostrils and contours of Darth Vader’s mask became the inspiration for the Mustang’s new fog lamp scoops and front-end shape.”
Ford certainly couldn’t have picked a better villain than Darth Vader, that’s for sure. When it comes to having a menacing presence, Vader’s grand entrance in any of the Star Wars movies still has a chilling effect, regardless of how old you are. In fact, this year marks 40 years that Darth has been terrorizing viewers on the big screen. Of course, the Mustang still has a longer legacy.
