Mustang Roush Stage 2 Walks Camaro SS in Drag Race

By -

Despite a stumbling start and a clear torque disadvantage, this Mustang manages to lay the gap on his GM foe.

Do a simple search on YouTube for Mustang versus Camaro drag races, and you’ll come across a million results. Or pretty close to it, anyway. And you’ll also find a million different results in terms of who wins this classic American battle. But that’s to be expected when you’re talking about cars that can be modified in a million different ways. This particular race provided by Wheels pits a 2018 Mustang Roush Stage 2 against a 2019 Camaro SS. And it’s interesting for a variety of reasons.

Since we don’t know any better, we’ll have to assume both cars are stock. Well, other than the fact that both are wearing drag wheels and tires. If that’s the case, the Roush Mustang represents nothing more than an appearance and suspension upgrade. Roush’s Stage 2 kit offers nothing in the way of power upgrades, minus an optional exhaust. So it’s probably packing Ford’s stock Coyote making 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque at the crank.

In the other lane, we’ve got a brand new SS packing GM’s 6.2-liter V8 producing 455 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. So on paper, we’d have to assume that the Camaro would have a slight edge in a straight-line race. We’ve also seen this play out in real life. But there are other factors at play here. Namely transmission choice and that ever-so-important driver mod.

At first, things aren’t looking so hot for our Mustang. He stumbles off the line, seemingly having trouble shifting and gets out 60-footed by the Camaro. But he manages to pull it together and not only make up ground, but create a considerable gap by the finish line. The Mustang trips the lights at 12.12-seconds at 127 mph. The Camaro, meanwhile, is way behind with a sluggish 13.43 at 109 mph.

Clearly, something is wrong with our GM pal. But like they say, a win’s a win. It isn’t like the Mustang truly ran a top time, either. It’s a race that both drivers would probably love another crack at, but that wasn’t in the cards for this video. So at least for now, we can file this one as another victory for the home team!
