Taking center stage in D.C., Mach-E GT arrives on the heels of First Edition sell-out of Ford’s electric pony.

We’re out on the floor of the 2020 Washington Auto Show, held at the Walter E. Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The show is usually overshadowed by those in Detroit and Chicago, but is now a lead-in for the big happenings to come.

For those attending the show, though, it’s a chance to check out the amazing rides to have debuted in the previous year. One such example is the 2021 Mustang Mach-E, which took center stage at the Ford display on the second floor of the convention center.

The Mach-E in question happened to be the Mach-E GT, which won’t hit showrooms until spring 2021. Draped in Grabber Blue Metallic (a color that, sadly, is only available on the GT), the electric crossover pony drew big crowds all day. No wonder: it’s just that cool.

While some Mustang fans aren’t fans of seeing the famed name on an electric crossover, there are more who are down for this ride. So many, in fact, that the First Edition models are now all spoken for, according to Ford Regional Development Specialist Brian Atkinson during the Ford press conference, January 23.

Atkinson dropped another bombshell, specifically about the GT. Those who put in their reservation for the high-performance model will reach zero to 60 in around 3.5 seconds, with 459 horsepower going to all corners. That last figure isn’t mentioned on the website, but we’re happy to hear this one’s ready to smoke the Tesla Model Y, and then some.

The Mach-E has lots of neat tricks to go along with the electricity, though. For instance, the roof line may not look like it, but the crossover has plenty of rear headroom. How? The black trim is hiding the true roof line.

Up front, the Mach-E will be a hit at any tailgate party. The front storage compartment can be filled with nice for keeping beers and sodas chilled, then drained when it’s back home in the garage.

We asked one of the Ford representatives on-site if there would be a Shelby Mach-E down the road. While they said that Ford doesn’t talk about future product plans, they did think such a machine would be pretty cool.

“For the first time in 55 years, Ford is expanding the Mustang lineup with the all-electric Mustang Mach-E,” said Atkinson. “It delivers power. It delivers style. It delivers freedom for a new generation. The Mustang Mach-E embodies the Mustang spirit.”
