Mustang Mule Could Be a New Performance Model

2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 test mule prototype spy shots in Detroit

Suspected to be the 2021 Mach 1, this camo-covered Mustang spotted in Michigan has both GT500 and Performance Pack cues.

You may or may not be familiar with the new Mach 1 Mustang that is said to be replacing the Bullitt in 2021. We don’t have much information about what its specs are intended to be, however this set of spy shots looks like we may be getting some ideas sooner than we thought.

While the camouflage does an excellent job of what it’s intended to do, there are some very evident elements from other Mustangs that are currently in production.

The first and most familiar part of this Mustang is the rear-end. The rear wing, valence, and even the quad-tip exhaust are identical to those found on the fearsome 2020 GT500.

If the production Mach 1 comes sporting this already iconic rear-end, we think Ford will have no issues at all getting them sold. While the GT500 bits are very easily identifiable, the other borrowed parts may not be as much of a giveaway to everyone.

One of the less obvious shared parts is the Performance Pack Level 2 wheels. Our friends at our sister site Mustang Forums pointed out that they are wrapped in Michelin PS4 or Cup 2 tires, and rest over a set of red brake calipers just like the Bullitt Mustangs.

While it’s fun to speculate, it is also worth noting that we don’t have any sort of confirmation that this is a Mach 1. For all we know, this could be a future update for the performance packs, or even another version of the Mustang that we don’t yet know about.

The front end appears to use the 2018-plus headlights, unlike the 2015-2017 headlights found on the GT350 and GT500. Additionally, it has a large front splitter like that of the Shelby, Performance Pack, and Bullitt Mustangs.

The lower front fascia seems to have a couple of minor changes, including turn signals sitting slightly higher than other Mustangs. However, the grilles look to be standard GT examples.

Only time will truly tell us what this car is. However, if the Mach 1 rumors are correct, it’s looking like it’s going to be a phenomenal car. With rumors floating around about the demise of the GT350 after 2020, we do have to wonder if this Mustang is set to be a more significant leap from the GT and a closer throw to the GT500 without consumers having to take the full leap. We could be looking at a high-performance middle ground set to replace two Mustangs, and not just one.

Again, though, all of this is speculative. So, take our thoughts with a grain of salt. The moment we know more, we’ll be sure you do too!
