Mustang Inspired All Electric SUV to Debut on November 17

By -

Mustang inspiration is crystal clear in the short teaser video that accompanies the debut date.

We have known for some time now that Ford is working on an all-electric sport utility vehicle that will draw heavy inspiration from the mighty Mustang, but we haven’t known when this sporty EV will be introduced to the world until today. Earlier this morning, the Motor Company announced that the all-electric, Mustang-inspired SUV will make its global debut Nov. 17, and the big reveal will be livestreamed on the automaker’s consumer website.

Big Reveal

While it is unclear whether or not there will be debut events around the world, similar to what the company did for the new Mustang which was also introduced globally, Ford currently has a dedicated page on the company’s consumer website with a section earmarked to show the livestream of the reveal. This means that everyone who wants to watch along as the Mustang-inspired electric SUV can do so on Ford’s website.

Mustang EV Logo

Right now, that special page on Ford.com has the blue glowing “runny pony” logo of the modern Mustang, along with a sketch of the silhouette of the all-electric SUV. Oddly, the video above is shared on Ford’s official Facebook page, but it is not currently posted on the reveal page on the Ford website, nor is it available on Ford’s YouTube channel. Mostly, the page on Ford.com is just a placeholder for the reveal livestream, but there is some general information about the company’s electrification programs that might be of interest to those folks who hope to buy the all-electric SUV.

Clear Mustang Inspiration

While we can’t see much of the all-electric SUV in the video above, the Mustang inspiration is undeniable in the teaser silhouette image. While the roofline of the four-door SUV is obviously quite a bit longer than that of the pony car, it has the basic fastback shape, it has similarly-shaped body lines to the Mustang and it appears to even have a hood with similar proportions to America’s longest-running performance car.

Most significantly, what little we can see of the headlights and taillights bear a striking resemblance to the current Mustang, with a segment headlight setup and a tri-bar taillight design that each look a great deal like the famous pony car.

Really, based on what little we can see in this latest teaser video, it appears as though the Ford designers may have done a terrific job of applying the Mustang exterior design language to a mid-sized SUV. While it is a very differently shaped vehicle, there is no denying the obvious influence of the pony car on this all-electric machine’s physical shape.

Fun-to-Drive EV

In addition to announcing the date of the global reveal and introducing this latest teaser video, today’s press release from Ford once again referenced the fact that this vehicle will be fun to drive.

“We’ve busted the myth that electric vehicles have to be boring. And we’ve got our customers covered with North America’s largest electric vehicle public charging network.1 Now Ford is gearing up to unveil its all-electric, Mustang-inspired SUV across the globe on November 17, 2019.”

Mustang EV Date

It is expected that this all-electric SUV will compete directly with the Tesla Model X, which is the best-performance electric SUV in the world. Frankly, we are a tad bit skeptical that the Ford EV will offer the 11-second quarter mile capabilities of the Model X, but if it is even close to the Tesla in terms of high performance capabilities, it will be one of the quickest vehicles in the company’s history.

With any luck, we will know for sure on November 17 as to whether or not the Mustang-inspired Ford SUV will truly compete with the Tesla Model X.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
