Mustang GT Mows Down Drag-ready Dodge Challenger
GT makes defeating this Scat Pack look like a cakewalk as it rapidly reels it in while running down the quarter-mile.
It’s always a good time to watch a Mustang beat up on its competitors. While Dodge certainly makes some serious horsepower with some of their muscle line up, the Scat Pack is more a less a slightly watered-down version of the SRT. This particular version has the 1320 package, which adds suspension components from the Dodge Demon, making it more adept for drag use. While it does come with an impressive 485 horsepower, it is right around 500 pounds heavier than a Mustang GT. Anyone familiar with drag racing knows that 500 pounds is quite a difference! So how do they hold up head to head?
Automotive YouTube channel Wheels is a haven of excellent drag racing content and their recent video aides in answering our question. While it’s evident that the first Mustang that throws down against the Challenger is modified, it’s still a great clip to watch. Though the Dodge gets a good jump, the Mustang quickly catches right back up to and passes it right before the finish line. The Mustang runs a blisteringly-quick quarter-mile at 10.52 seconds at 136 mph. That’s more than a second faster than the Challenger, which ran 11.62 seconds at 117 mph.
Luckily, the second race features a more level playing field. The blue Challenger lines up once again with what appears to be a stock Mustang GT. This time, the launches are nearly dead even. Though, the beginning of the race isn’t where that theme stops. Throughout almost the entire strip, the Challenger and Mustang stay entirely side-by-side. However, at the very end, the Challenger manages to edge out the Mustang GT by a hair.
While we can’t rule out driver error or loss of traction, we do have to applaud the Challenger. It is pretty quick for how heavy it is, and it seems to make good use of its power. That’s enough of that, though, as we don’t have to tell you which one we’d still prefer to have. We’re going to have to stick with the Mustang.
