Mullet Mustang Sees Big Improvements From New Upgrades
The Mullet Mustang’s Latest Upgrades Are Finally Put to the Test on the Strip and Road Course.
We left off the Mullet Mustang build with the final installation of rear end upgrades. It received a new watts-link rear suspension and 4.10 final drive gears. Both upgrades were slated to improve acceleration and rear end grip, while also getting the most out of the engine’s power band.
Variables come in all shapes and sizes, and cold temperatures at a race track have quite an impact on performance. With the needle hovering just above freezing, it’s nearly impossible to take full advantage of any performance modifications.
Even with the weights stacked against them, the team from Speed Academy took the Mullet Mustang back to Toronto Motorsports Park and set some times. On the road course, the tires took much longer to warm up than expected, and almost created some pucker moments. Shorter gearing paid in big dividends though, and combined with the Watts-link suspension, they scrubbed off nearly two seconds.
Drag strip advantages were also found with times nearly getting into the 13-second mark. Temperatures made the launch surface so slick that launches had to be made very carefully. Wheel slip in second and first were evident, but with better track conditions and a tire package, we would see far better times.
Guess we’ll have to see what 2017 brings.
