Low Mileage ’99 Cobra Hides a Supercharger
With a supercharger under the hood and an ’03/’04 style bumpers and spoiler, this Cobra could fool you into thinking it was a Terminator.
When we talk about the New Edge Cobras, all of the attention goes to the supercharged 2003 and 2004 Terminator Cobras – or maybe the ’00 Cobra R every now and again. Lost in the shuffle are the normally aspirated 1999 and 2001 Cobras. With 320 horsepower on tap, they were reasonably quick cars in their day.
Apparently the previous owner of this Rio Red 1999 Cobra was tired of being ignored. From the listing on PC Classic Cars in Sherman, Texas, we can see that the stock Cobra bumpers and spoiler have been replaced with their ’03/’04 counterparts. Coupled with the chrome Cobra R wheels and lowering springs, we have to admit that it looks quite tasteful.
All Dressed Up
The real story, however, is under the hood. There, you’ll find an intercooled ProCharger setup, which should boost the power of this DOHC modular V8 to Terminator territory. Other performance upgrades include a an off-road H-pipe and a Flowmaster cat-back exhaust. All in all, it looks similar lots of modified Cobras we saw prowling the streets in the early 2000s.

Inside, you’ll find some auxiliary gauges on an A-pillar pod and a paltry 40,000 miles on the odometer. From the condition, it appears that this Cobra was pampered despite its numerous modifications. However, the CarFax tells an interesting story – 8 previous owners and a minor accident. Still, at an asking price of $24,500, it’s not a terrible value, either, especially considering that Terminators with that mileage sell for a bit more money. Apparently, someone else thinks so, as there is a sale pending as of this writing.

These SVT Cobras are rare, but thankfully, many have survived in good condition with tasteful modifications. As the years go on, we expect to see these cars get their due in the collector car sphere. The 1999 SVT Cobra was a major Mustang milestone, with factory independent rear suspension offered for the first time on a Mustang. When you think about it, it’s truly impressive how far Ford took the Fox platform.
