Galpin-Fisker Rocket is the Ultimate Mustang

If a 725-horsepower carbon-fiber Mustang is bad to the bone, then Henrik Fisker and Beau Boeckmann of Galpin Auto Sports have been up to no good. The two men have combined forces to create the baddest Mustang ever: the Rocket, which debuted today at the 2014 LA Auto Show.

Inspired by Fisker’s favorite Mustang, the 1968 Shelby GT500, Fisker and Galpin Auto Sports call the Rocket the “ultimate American muscle car”. With the Rocket’s supercharged 5.0L V8 pumping 18 more horsepower than the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, it’s probably fair to call the Rocket the ultimate muscle car. What’s even fairer is to call the Rocket the ultimate Mustang.

What falls short of “ultimate” is that we’re still in the dark about what this thing weighs, but with that carbon-fiber body, it should be feathery. A lightweight S550 Mustang is just what Ford pony fans want to see right now. We were all a bit heartbroken when the 2015 Mustang squashed the scales a little more heavily than we’d hoped. With its carbon body, the Rocket’s weight numbers should act as an antidote to the stress phenomenon known as “heavy S550 syndrome”.

The S550 Mustang is already a well-designed vehicle, but with the Fisker treatment, the car looks like a true exotic thanks to all the custom (and functional) aerodynamic bodywork that sits on 21-inch wheels. Then again, you’d expect an exotic-looking Mustang from the guy who helped design the Aston Martin DB9 and Vantage. I think that polished aluminum bar bisecting the hexagonal front grille is a bit much, though.

Still, the 2015 Galpin-Fisker Rocket is pretty damn beautiful. I’m looking forward to seeing it on the streets after it hits a select few dealerships early next year.

This car can also be an example of how quickly a sketch can go from idea to reality. Henrik Fisker and Beau Boeckmann began working on this car back in August, and now it has just debuted in L.A., and is headed for limited production. Granted, bringing a specialized tuner to market can happen a lot more quickly than bringing an all-new production car to market, but seriously, Acura, what’s your excuse with the NSX? I’m tired of waiting 10 years for cars to come out. The rest of the industry should take notes from Fisker and Galpin Auto Sports.
