Fox Body Pre-Runner Mustang Could Be Your Baja Beast

Be a modern Thomas Crown (the awful Pierce Brosnan one, not the cool Steve McQueen one) with this off-road, Baja-ready Mustang.

In the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, an art thief, Thomas Crown (played by Brosnan) drives an oddball 1967 Shelby GT350 convertible that has been seriously modified for off-road driving. The car only appears on screen for a few minutes, but the Highland Green beauty sure made an impression 18 years ago. Renee Russo plays the love interest in that film, having to throw her leg over the welded-shut doors to enjoy an evening beach cruise in the roll-bar equipped green machine. If you have always wanted to drive something similar, but like the classically wedgy lines of the early ’90s Fox better than those of a late ’60s Shelby, then you’re in luck. We’ve found the car for you.

Beau Mikelthun is known for building some wild machines, including his Toyota 2JZ turbo-powered ’60s Mustang “Gulfstang” project. This is his second such Mustang project in recent years, this time powered by a more traditional 5.0 V8, but with a less traditional off-road vibe. This 1991 Mustang he’s taken to calling the “Mudstang.” It was finished just a few weeks ago, and he’s already toying with the idea of selling it. Having followed the entire build on his Instagram account, we’re confident that the car is well built, with quality products. It started life as a 2.3-liter automatic car, so nothing important was lost in the build.

This would be the ideal car for an outdoorsy type that still wants to be able to rip a few burnouts or shred a donut on a whim. With a listed price of ten grand, Beau claims he’d be losing about half of his investment in this project. While the car was built for him, now that the build is over, he has a sense that his time with the car is at an end. For some people, the build is the whole point, and the end result is a bit inconsequential. We’re absolutely stoked on the idea of picking this up and going for a few fire road two-tracking adventures. What do you think, is this car sacrilege or super rad?
