2005-2010 Comparison
2010 is better. i really like them both, especially that windveil
but i think the 2010 is the cooler design. look at those lines, they just all go together really well. the 2010 GT has that perfect aggresive look, in fact i'd say its the most aggresive looking of the three. i think ford nailed the design this time, more so than before
BUT i will add i like both and am keeping my 07 for now!

yeah wow, seeing them both like this, the 05 really does look outdated.
that rear quarter shot, the 2010 musatngs taillights look down right sinister next to the humungo 05 square tails.

I Agree, I've been looking at 05-09's around town all day and I keep thinking WOW, they really changed it a lot for 2010. So I had been thinking about doing a Comparison Post and While going through all the other pic's of the 05-09's I just kept thinking to my self, how much I like this new Mustang. It's so much more Sculpted and Flowing. The 05-09's now look Chunky and Blocky to me.
A sore point for me about the 05-09's has always been those Big Wheel Arches, especially the way the resolved them behind the rear wheels. They always looked odd to me, that was my Big Black Diffuser on the 05's. Not Anymore! I love how they flow smoothly into the body. Even the Big Black Diffuser is starting to grow on me more and more. The good news for those that hate it, is that it's a Separate Piece! You can take it off and paint it or replace it with something aftermarket.

I have really mixed feelings about the '10. I really like a lot about it, like the new standards (sequentials, upgraded interior, and ambient lighting) and options (nav, colors, wheels). Things I don't care for are the taillight lenses, both the shape and the white verticals. The side treatment: It's like they were trying to go back to a complete '65 side scoop, but didn't finish the job. Why doesn't the upper bodyline just meet the top of the scoop? It looks almost like an afterthought. Then the body line is continued on the back quarter, a la '69 coupe, for no apparent reason, further disconnecting it from the side "scoop". I like the way the rear slopes forward, but not the way the rear corners are lopped off. I like the way the tops of the front fenders slope downward, but not the amber lights duplicated in the headlight bucket. (I'd prefer they'd just left the lights in the bumper) I think the giant fogs now look odd with the sleeker nose. They need to be downsized and maybe placed elsewhere. And last, I would have killed for hips on the last model, this being the change I looked forward to the most, but I'm not totally sold on these. They just don't "fit", to me. I guess I was hoping for something more like the '67 hips rather than these '69 hips. Overall, the car looks great, akin to the '66-'67 upgrade, but it's not enough to get me to trade in my '08 SGT. I can't wait to see what Shelby does with it.

You got it Tampabear! I would never have thought of that, but that made it all better. Even the hips look right, now, completing the '70 vs. the '67 look. I am sure that they considered many versions and picked the best one, but I like yours better than theirs. Then again, I'm not a designer, and will probably grow to love it just the way that it is, eventually. I'm still not getting rid of my SGT though.
This is what I Wanted to Do for a living, but Life had Other Plans, so I never got to go to College to Become a Designer. Well I am a Designer , but I needed that Degree to get the job.
WOW!!! As much as I love my 07 GT, the '10 seems to do what I call, "fill in all the gaps" if you will. Those side by side comparos just amplify what the 05-09 was missing. I love the much hated rear end and I will be getting me an '11.... Just waiting on the "big motor".
I just sold my '05 GT to get my '08 SGT. My wife warned me about the '10, saying maybe I should wait and see what it looks like. I wanted the SGT because it was modified by Shelby, at Shelby, and that seemed rather historic, like it was done in the '60s. Who knows if SAI will do anymore pre-title cars? Probably, but no guarantee. I admit that I was nervous about the '10 tempting me, but now that I've seen it, I'm gonna be ok. I do like it, but not enough to trade again. When you think about it, the '65 and the '68 are relatively similar, and that's how I view the '05-'09 vs the '10+.
Good lord thats a real eye opener. See I loved the S197 when it came out. "I gotta get me one of these" kind of thing. But I was always planning how I would modify the looks to get just that right look. But after seeing the '10, and seeing this comparo, Im REALLY wanting the new one. And I dont think Id change it.....much. And the tail is really starting to grow on me.
My biggest problem (besides being jobless right now) is I HAVE a really nice '95 sitting in the garage right now.

I don't understand how so many people hate the new rear end. I have hated the 05-09 rear since the moment I laid eyes on it, and seeing them side by side brings back exactly why. It's so boring and blocky, and uninspired. It has always looked like a bad childrens drawing of a Mustang back end to me. The new rear has so much flow and character. I think it's just a case of 99 all over again where we have become so used to the present design that anything else looks unfamiliar and therefore is disliked. I think 5 years from now everyone will agree that the 2010 is by far the better design in every way
This kind of thing makes me happy I procrastinated in college... now I am graduating and going into the career world with the 2010 as an option!!!
And prior to seeing this comparison, I thought I would do the logical thing, and buy a used '08 GT in 2 years and save maybe 15 grand....
... but my god do those 2010s look good. I am going to splurge. Definitely!!
Either way, ANYTHING is better than my slightly modded 2000 v-6. But hey-- where is the green colors on the 2010!? I want green!!!

You win the "funniest post of the day" for this comment.
The '05 - '09 Mustang is SUPPOSED to look dated. It's a purely retro design. The whole purpose of the car is to bring us back to the glory days of the late 60's Mustangs. And that's exactly where the 2010 Mustang fails miserably. It's no longer a retro design, but more of a Euro-look bastardization of the '05 - '09 retro styling.
I'm just thankful that there are still new '09 Mustangs available. They will always be known as the classical retro styled Mustang. The '09 Mustang is the only new car I will probably ever own that I will not feel that I need to get a "newer" body style version of the car, just because of the fact that it's styling is timeless in a retro sorta way. Park any '05 - '09 Mustang next to a '69 Mustang and you can clearly see a very strong resemblance from any angle. Sadly, I don't think that's true of the 2010 model, especially from the rear.
Don't get me wrong...I'm not trying to hate on the new design. I just think it's silly of Ford to go to retro styling and then try to make the retro styling more modern. Then again, I guess it would have been weird to go from purely retro styling to ultra modern styling. I was wondering which direction Ford was going to go after the retro styling. Well, maybe I should say that I'm still wondering which way they'll go with the future styling of the car.

Man, the 05-09 looks plain now. This 2010-2014 is going to make 05-09's look as ugly and plain as 94-98 SN95 mustangs.. (no offense but they look like bulbous 2 door Tauras's to me)
Thanks for collecting these together Tampa - none of my coworkers can see any differences in the new mustang (non mustang enthusiasts).. this thread makes the changes very obvious.
