Texas wants too much money. $500 for five years PLUS your annual registration fee for those five years. At the end of the five years, you have to re-apply to keep the plates. (I think it's $800 for 10 years).
I wanted to get this - "NOT ONE" - because my car resembles a Shelby, but isn't one, but I ain't gonna shell out that kind of money...

Spendiest multi-year plate option is $495 for 5 years, $595 for 10. All I cared about was the plate design because I wanted a black and white plate/ The random number was $195 for five years. The new regular issue plates are going back to black on white.

Wow...that's crazy. It's like $10 a year for vanity plates and an extra $10 for me bc I have custom plates. It's like $62 a year total including registration in VA

Here is mine, I really had to think about getting Boss "build number" but had to go for my initials. From where I come from originally personal plates cost 10000's of dollars, so this is a steal for $50...
