To me a road trip spans multiple days and has you stopping in different places for the night and eventually returning home. If it happens on one day, no matter how many hours it takes, it's a drive.

But why on earth would you argue about something like that?

A road trip is a journey that can be remembered and retold in bars and where beer and spirits are consumed in quantity.

A roadtrip is a time of fellowship, togetherness. A making of memories across miles and miles of roads and multiple stops. Stories that can be told over and over again. A time when friends will be friends, families can be famiies, bonds will be formed (as well as tested). Roadtrips are when we rediscover what it means to be American. A journey across the open road, celebrating freedom. Experiencing the outdoors and just being ourselves.

That's exactly my definition as well. One day is just a 'drive'.
Our journey to San Diego last spring and wanted33 trip to Route 66 last summer are road trips. I only remember his since we both live in NC and those were pretty big road trips.

Now that's what I call a road trip also Tom. Two hours is just a Sunday drive.......up to the Blue Ridge, right Dave.

2 hours is a decent qualifier. But I'd consider it any drive that's more than something routine. If you start thinking of how to prepare for things you might need, or start having to really find directions, that's a roadtrip.

You bet. We have a 15 day ROAD TRIP coming up soon visiting western states national parks. Our longest was two months in a Morgan covering 11,500 miles from Western Washington to the Grand Canyon to Athens, GA to Toronto and back home.

We are planning heading to Yellowstone via North Dakota from North Carolina in August. Looks like it will run around 15 -16 days also. Taking my F-150 Platinum this time. You never know, you might just see a back road.

A road trip is defined as, No time table no particular destination and checking out anything you want no matter how insignificant or weird, even if it's the worlds largest strand of belly button lint.

You only need a few beers for a drive but you need some highway lemonaid for a road trip.

Road trip = out of the normal daily grind.... several hour drive one way. I can make it to AR in one day but its 700 miles away. That is a road trip at least to me.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's a road trip if you can't make it on only one tank of gas...so like 60 miles in my mustang

Or I like the previous answer of needing supplies/snacks.
