Question on engine oil check

Good day guys.

So this morning I decided to check the oil, to see where my levels were, and noticed that it is not even reaching the bottom hole on the dipstick. The car has only 4K miles, and I had an initial oil change done at Ford at around the 1K mile mark. I do have the oil separator, but the oil in it was not reaching even the 1/8 mark on the canl. The initial oil change was done at 1K miles, and obviously I've put 3K miles into the new oil change. How can the oil level be so low that's not even reaching the lower hole on the dipstick? I double checked it on a level surface with the engine hot. Any ideas?

Did you verify it was full after the oil change? Also, how long did it sit with the engine hot before you checked? It can take a little while for everything to drain back down to the pan after shutdown.

Thanks for the quick reply SpectreH. I actually waited around 3 - 4 minutes before I checked it, after I turned the engine off. I'll check it now, as it's been about 30 minutes to see if anything has changed. To answer your first question, I did not check the levels after Ford did the oil change. Didn't think I needed to do that, but it's certainly a good suggestion.

OK, so just checked it, and it's still not reaching the bottom hole.

I'd add oil and keep an eye on it. I'd hope at 4000 miles, the rings would be seated.

So should I be concerned enough to take it back to Ford?

Personally, I'd take it to them for analysis.

Will do so, as they are close by. I appreciate the feedback, SpectreH.

O, I bought a new 2012 GT with a 5.0 that went thru oil at an alarming rate as well. Worked with Ford for quite some time (5k miles) B4 they found a bad PCV . Stuck open, so they said oil was was blowing thru.
They replaced valve, solved problem. Good luck, G
