Need opinions on 2015 GT performance package

Hey everyone,

I've been contemplating getting the '15 GT with the performance package. I've read some reviews, seen some Youtube videos, but I want to hear it from normal people who drive this thing daily. My last Mustang was a 2010 GT Premium which I sold a couple years ago.

Obviously, the performance package comes with the 3.73 rear end gear, but my big concern with this is fuel economy while cruising on the freeway. Sure I want to be able to light up the car and go very fast, but this will also become my daily driver. I have a 15 mile freeway commute to work each way, every day, and I typically cruise at 65 with cruise control on. What sort of gas mileage can I realistically expect from this car with that rear end gear on prolonged freeway driving? I live in Southern California and I do a lot of freeway driving (not stop and go). I want this to be my dream car but I also want it to be affordable to drive normally.

If the performance package is going to destroy my gas mileage, what about a car without it, but with the optional 3.55 rear end? Definitely want to hear honest opinions about this from those who have them!

3:55 vs 3:73 under normal driving conditions I think would be maybe 1mpg difference. Scott

I think this comes down to one of those things where if you cant afford the difference in gas on a 40k car then you're buying the wrong car. Think of it like this, the PP costs you a couple of cheeseburgers per month to drive.

I drive almost 79 miles a day for work with my S550 GT with PP...I am averaging 18.9 mpg with almost my entire trip on the interstate. The published mpg is a nice dream, but the reality is that it is a sports car and gets sports car mileage. I will admit I still get a stupid grin every time I start it up

My 5.0 auto gets 23 mpg hwy with cruise set on 80 mph. Even better if I slow down, but that doesn't happen often. Of course the auto comes with a 3.15 rear.

I have a 2014 gt 5.0 track pack with the same 3.73 gearing, and I share a very similar 14 mile commute that consists of a little over 10 miles cruising at 65-70 and the rest 45-50.

I get right at 23 mpgs for that trip with some stop and go for the last few miles. I have 11k on the odometer. I've seen as high as 25mpg on that commute. The highest tank average I've seen is 24. My normal tank I get 19.5 combining work with running errands and the occasional spirited driving session. Which, mind you, is right at the sticker for combined mpg.

I would assume the 15 would be similar as it's not a whole lot different powertrain-wise or weight-wise. I drove a 2013 focus st prior to this car, and found only marginally better mpg for commuting, same trips being 26-27 and consistently 24-25 over a tank combined. 5 mpg isn't a world of difference for having 170 more horsepower and Rwd.

The gearing is nice in the 3.73, but the revs are pretty high in 6th gear for highway cruising. Not optimal for MPGs, better for passing so if you plan for the car to be more of a freeway cruiser, I would get 3.15 or 3.31 rear axle. The higher ratio 3.73 is just going to have more punch off the line and around town.

Have a '15 GT with the PP. First gear is too low with the 3.73 rear end. I almost always take-off in 2nd. Shifting is better than previous models, but needs a gentle touch or you end up with 'ratchet' feeling on each shift. Not a grind, just a rough feel. Mine has the Recaro seats and I've seen some material separating from the fabric covers, just like the premium leather seats have done. It stretches back after an hour of so. I get 24mpg on the highway when easy of the accelerator. Normal driving for me is about 22 hwy and 18 in town. Hope this helps. ~ HarleyFrank

I have a 50 mile highway trip to the AF Base. Last month, before i sold my 2012 GT 5.0 MT 6 with 3.55 rear, I would get 27mpg in the Spring temps doing 60 mph.

Yesterday, made the same trip in my 2015 GT 5.0 MT6 PP with 3.73 rear. I got 26 mpg doing and average 60mph.

As a side note, if I had my choice, I would have gotten a 3.55 in my 2015 . . . If I had the choice.

Keep ur foot out of it and the mileage goes up.

It's not going to destroy your mileage for sure. I do a mix of city / hwy and the average for the first 1000 miles was about 19. If you drive it at 60mph on the highway locked on cruise you can do well over 20. The sticker is clearly set for the old double-nickel speed limit in 6th gear on a flat desert road with no reason to go faster or slower for 100 miles. The way I figure it, I had a G35 before this, and it averaged about 20.5 with the same driving. Now I have a 2015 GT PP that is an incredible driving experience in comparison. You can have the 2MPG that I lost.

I don't know how you guys get the kind of mileage stated. Granted most of my driving is around town but my 2009 G37 would avg 11.9mpg my 2012 Subaru STi did not do much better. My 2014 GT Track Pack with the 3.73's averages about 12mpg also in town. Went on a 140 mile highway cruise and yeah I saw 24mpg up until the time I stopped driving it like my grandma would have. I really had to try for that 24mpg. Get into it a little and it quickly drops back to 20mpg or less. Bottom line is yeah you can see over 20mpg on the highway but who wants to buy a 420hp v8 to baby it to get the best mpg. I just find it comical that people are worried about gas mileage when getting a car like these. A buddy of mine bought a ford raptor and complained after that he got single digit mpg around town. Told him what did you expect, v8 over 400hp and a 5700lb truck. Traded it and bought a v6 BMW x5. Mileage around town for him in the BMW is barely 13mpg. It all how you drive.

Indeed. Yes. My mileage numbers were computer generated over the lifetime of the car (G35). I never reset the counter in the computer. I just threw it out there. I do a mixture of Hwy and City. The avg on the Mustang is over the 1000 miles I've had it. Also in many cases my speed is decided for me by the prevailing traffic speed during commute times in CA, which is often at the 50Mph range on a good day. If you are in a high gear at that speed the MPG goes up. When I drive for fun the MPG goes down. To be honest I don't care as I said. I bought it for a fun ride, not to mimic a Prius.

Have quite had mine for more than 700 miles due to my very short commute these days but on a few extended trips I've seen 25-26 mpg cruising.

I need to find a nice very long level road and see what my car will do loafing along at cruise.

After 3500 miles I get anywhere from 14mpg on my 7 minute commute to work, 16mpg when cruising around the city, and 24mpg on an 800 mile out of state trip. Cool thing is the fuel estimator is based on mpg, so normally it says I can only get 250 miles per tank, but it kept adjusting itself on my road trip giving me 350 miles.

Indeed! I just cannot lay off enough to see 24mpg, ever. Not even once. I average 17-18 upon each fill up (calculated by the miles and gas added, not the onboard computer), although the computer and calculated numbers match pretty much each time. I've seen 22.x on the trip odometers, but over an entire tank there WILL be times I get less mileage, either due to traffic or just the way I drive. I did not buy this car and options to miser on gas conservation!

The gearing with the MT82 and Performance Package is the mpg killer. My 09 Shelby with mods gets about the same mileage as my GT when driven normally due to the comparatively conservative gearing in that car.

There's your realistic gas mileage from real people. Like others have said, the difference between PP and non-PP is like 1 MPG.

i have a PP, drove it on highway one weekend...averaged about 22mpg...
if you want mpg then the GT is not what your looking for...like everyone said...
its not a car you buy based on mpg....
you will have more diff in mpg based on how much your right foot is heavy on the pedal no matter what gears it has...
if this is your only car and DD and your worried about mpg then the focus get great gas mileage and has some pep to it....
at this point in my life i didnt buy mustangs due to their mph factor, i have other cars for that..
