Manual shifting at 80+MPH

Guys

Question. I have a 2017, two month old Mustang GT, manual transmission, with the performance package. Just got back from a 2 hour highway trip, and I had a chance to finally get it above 80 MPH. I've been driving manual shifts for all my life, however, not on a car as powerful as this one. My question - is it safe for the transmission, if I am cruising at 80 MPH on sixth gear, to drop the gear to 5th in order to get to around 100 MPH, and then shift back to 6th? The car had tremendous pick up when I did that, but I am not sure if I did any sort of damage to the transmission by doing so. BTW, I only have around 2,500 miles on it, well above the break in period.

Also, if going from 6th to 5th at 80 MPH is not too bad for the transmission, would going from 6th to 4th at 80 MPH, in order to help me get faster speeds and up shift from 4th to 5th then 6th, is that not recommended, or does it matter with this car's power/engine? My intent on these questions is to find out how if I am cruising at 80 MPH and I get someone that wants to try to race, how I can get the faster speed, at the quickest time?

Looking forward to some answers/advise.

Thanks guys

1.) dont race on the street you put everyone at risk!
2.) as long as your not over revving the engine you can switch to any lower gear!
3.) go find a drag strip, auto cross, or road course to get your speed fix. It's more fun and safer for everyone around you!
( not that we all haven't probably raced some on the street,I know I have. Just the older I get the wiser I get and I try to share that wisdom with everyone whether they want it or not)

Your car will blow up the second it detects you're trying to street race someone.

That's what 5th is for. 6th is for fuel economy, 5th is for passing and 4th is for trying to see if you can make the rear tires spin at 80.

Just for your reference, here the top speeds in each gear on the GT assuming 6800RPM and 3.73s
1st - 40
2nd - 61
3rd - 87
4th - 112
5th - 148
6th - ~155 (drag limited)

Here is the link to complete chart if you have other final drive ratio:

5.Monster - thank you for the info. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for, as I continue to learn about my new toy.

Thank you again.

I used to down shift to 3rd at 80 to get around school buses. It would usually blow the tires off.

Max accel from 80, yeah, go to 4th.

Although 5th, as you noticed, is not bad

Enjoy your car. We didn't buy a 400+ horsepower Mustang to do the speed limit in the right lane. That's what Priuses are for.
I drive fast. I don't go 100+ everywhere, but I enjoy my car and its power.
I wish it was warmer out today, cuz I would've taken it out this morning, instead of my truck.
