Looking at a 2016 GT Convertible
I'm looking at a 2016 GT Premium Convertible at a Ford dealership tomorrow.
It has the 6 spd auto, and has 61K miles. I have the original window sticker, and it says the only options aside from the auto tranny was the Black accent Package (which I guess included the 19 inch wheels, heated/cooled seats w/6way power and blade decklid spoiler), plus voice activated Nav (who cares?).
However, the CarFax says it was a rental for a year (17K miles) and then 1 other owner from 2017 until earlier this year, 2024. In 2021, a a minor damage to the rear is recorded.
I am planning to have my mechanic go over it before committing to it.
Asking price is $22.7K, which seems reasonable.
What does this group think of this deal, price wise or specific questions or concerns I should have?

I personally would pass on any car with a rental history. It may have been maintained well by the rental company but a V8 was probably 'beaten' many times by a/hole drivers.. I don't want that history for any car I own and plan to enjoy for many years. There are too many loved garaged cars out there to buy that have never seen triple digit speeds or floored more than a few times. Yeah, they cost thousands more but it's the best $$$ you will ever spend 9 times out of 10.
Keep looking.....and be willing to travel to buy the right car. This is the perfect time to buy a convertible. It's winter and it's the holidays when few sales take place.

I too would pass on a rental, especially in a performance car. Too many are abused and returned. Look for one or two owners with low mileage, but still do your mechanic inspection.
If you watch you will find your perfect car that has been babied and treated right.

Count me in as well, as I would also pass on any rental performance car and search for a Mustang which has been well taken care of and garage kept...

Think of the past special Mustang Hertz rentals as well. Very few were excellent by the time they were for sale to the public. Most were driven real hard and the new owners ended up paying for those hard miles to get the cars back to the way they should have been.
I don't see this rental car being that different. Typical rental driver, "WOOHOO! This baby has a V8. Let's see what this thing can do!". No thanks.....

I will be the sole dissenter regarding the rental car: in most cases I think they are well maintained, and probably not beat any worse than a privately owned Mustang. The later model cars usually have the "my key" limitations set that won't allow the car to go over 85 (or something ike that) and/or won't allow high RPM or burnouts. I doubt anyone has done to a rental, what I have done to my own car on a road track.
But I guess I'm too late, since the OP has probably made a decision by now.
