I hope the Ford/GM 10 speed is better than the Jeep Cherokee/ZF nine speed I had in my 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The key word there is HAD. Got rid of it with only about 6000 miles on it because of constant problems many with the transmission. It was constantly shifting, sometimes roughly. Some downshifts were like getting rear ended. Sometimes it would not downshift properly and you had poor throttle response when you needed to accelerate. It also had many TSBs related to the transmission that really never fixed the problems. A good number of owners had to have complete transmission replacements on very low mileage vehicles. I finally traded it in on a 2015 Explorer. No problems at all with it so far. Good luck with the 10 speed. Hopefully Ford/GM has proven it to be reliable and not delivering a product that needs more development time like Jeep did.

Worried that the new 10 spd auto may not be reliable...?
Ok hows this - I promise to give it a good torture test during the first year - & then if it doesn't hold up - I'll trade it in right away for a 6 spd!
Bet with all the demand with the redesign - I wouldn't loose much on depreciation!
Hahaha.

Review on the new zl1. I like this guys reviews. He's always giddy when accelerating but he's very thorough.
The point of putting this here is he goes into a large amount of detail about the 10 speed while daily driving.
Thought it'd be useful to this thread.

Lightning Blue is a killer color.
That would be one of my picks for sure. As for the transmission??! A10 all the way. 10 speed automatic!

Looks like they did their homework (along with Ford) on that transmission. I hope Ford gives some variant of the Mustang an equally impressive engine. Manually shifted, it seems light years ahead of the 6 speed in my '13.

Hilarious video. I love it.
You can so tell the guy is not a driver. Steve McQueen would ***** slap the **** out of him.
It would be funny to watch his reaction to the acceleration of an Aventador.

The giggles and "shock" on acceleration is his shtick. Check out his other videos. He's got 6 digit subscribers and has reviewed dozens or cars, some very expensive cars. He definitely knows what he's doing behind the wheel.
His actually car is a GT, I think a 2016.
But regardless, I think he spent almost more time talking about the A10 than anything else and answered a lot of questions that have been asked in this thread.
It doesn't hunt for gear. It's fast. Etc.

There have been several replies already that say it all. Firstly, transmission choice is always a matter of personal choice. I learned on a standard tranny and have been driving them ever since. I sometimes curse when I get into heavy traffic but that is one of the prices you pay if you really like DRIVING your car and getting more involved. If all I wanted is bragging rights about quick shifts and 1/4 mile times, then the new auto transmissions will always be faster shifting than any manual.
But I would not chide anyone for choosing an auto. Lots of vette drivers choose them over the automatic and lots of automakers have phased out their stick shifts forever. I am very glad that Ford still makes them and gives those of us who love rowing their own boat the choice. I would not have it any other way on my 2016 GT.

I agree with everything what you just said.
Over my 40+ years of driving - I have made the choices to drive both types.
My factory order 05 GT Mustang was a stick - then I traded it when I ordered my current ride - a manual 2011 Vette.
But now I'm ready to buy again - but this one will be an auto.
Lovin the look of the 10 Spd - as long as I don't get too anxious by waiting till this Fall!
Gotta admit - I got a trade in quote towards a used AMG Mercedes the other day...

That 10 speed auto is the only way to go unless you're going to put the car on the race track. If that's the case then it's a matter of your personal preference. The auto is quicker on the road and on the drag strip and has 3 overdrives.

So I pretty much made up my mind regarding which model year Stang I am going to get (2018) and the color (Lighting Blue) now comes the hard decision.
10 speed Auto or Manual? Before all you die hard drivers out there tell me manual is the only way to go I got to tell you from driving both auto and manual.
Auto has always been more consistent in my 1/4 mile races. The only problem I have with auto is how reliable it is. This co-developed 10-speed auto tranny looks interesting but I wonder how it will hold up over time with the abuse we give it.

I hate to have my new 2018 Ford Mustang GT sitting in the shop because of auto transmission problems - I've seen that movie before - not a big fan.

If you're looking for nothing but smooth shifts and 0-xxx performance go with the Auto.
If you actually want to be involved in the driving of the car get the Manual. It's really as simple as that.
My 6-speed is slower than the newer autos. I can't match the shift speed. It is going to be smoother than me half the time. But I wouldn't trade my manual if you paid me. I can drop the clutch in any gear, I can skip 3 gears and go directly to where I want to be, and a single well executed heal-and-toe downshift is more rewarding than 2700 lever pulls.
So do you actually want to drive your car or no? Otherwise Uber is a good choice too.
