Actually the 275/40 19 is pushing the limits on a 9 inch wheel for any type of cornering. The performance was better with the 255/40 19 and since I have since put those back on the front with the 295/35 19 in the rear running 19X9 front and 19X10 rear with the wheels handling if awesome.

for handling you want the wheel to be at least the "measuring width" for the tire, and the measuring width is 9.5" for every 275/40-19 that I checked -- so yep that all makes good sense

275/40/19 is most definitely pushing the limits on an 19x9" wheel. especially when it comes to cornering up front .. The optimal measuring width is 9.5" size wheels paired with 275/40/19" tires while the optimal measuring width is 9" size wheels paired with 255/40/19" tires.
