Unhappy Have you ever seen a rotor like this ?

Hi,

I was changing the front pads of my 2011 GT (32000km) and i have discovered this on the right front rotor :

A manufacturing defect ?

The brake fluid was changed for a DOT 5.1 in april before a track day.
And i remember that this rotor was smoking after a session in the afternoon for some minutes. But the car has kept the same braking performance all the day.

Serge.

Did you just change fluid and not pads? I had something similar happen to my rear brakes on one side because some grease got on the rotor after the pad change. Also change from 5.1 to DOT 4, something like Motul 660 or Stoptech 600.

Wow, at the very least you should get your rotors turned!

It is my understanding that DOT 5 is not to be used in vehicles with ABS.

OP said he is using DOT 5.1, this is different than DOT5. DOT 5 is silicone fluid, DOT 5.1 is not, it is the same type fluid as DOT3 or DOT4 but with a higher boiling point.

Have not heard good things about their rotors without their pads. And if you did pads I would suggest HP+ unless you care about squeal. Also no real need to get anything beyond stock rotors unless your really competing.

It was impossible to find their yellow pads for the non-brembo calipers.

I use my car daily. So i don't want squealing pads.
I will only do 2 to 4 trackdays in a year.

Get a louder exhaust and the squeal won't bother you as much.

This afternoon, disassembly of the 2 front rotors.

Same rotor after using sand paper and a dremel finish with a metal brush :

No more brown tracks, but the rotor is not slick where the brown parts were.
I think it was some rust. It was so hard, it did 2 steps in the pads.

Left rotor was showing the same problem :

Is it from defective calipers that don't apply pressure evenly?

All the cars me and my coworkers have seen that look like this have come from either the cost or up north. Salt water doing it.Don't know exactly why they rust that way. We had an explorer come in today with all 4 like that. Lady told us she bought it in Canada.

The sliders are stuck. Move the slider boots and clean them with wd40. Let them dry and pack them with synthetic grease, make sure they are not bent or stuck. This is the reason I hate sliding calipers. They can start dragging and then ruin a set of rotors and pads.

either replace those or have them turned. they still look pretty sad after the sanding

The calipers are moving on the sliders axles with no effort.
