Top Gear

Last night on the newest American Top Gear (the History Channel version) they included a segment with a Silver Laguna Seca B2 car.

Yeah that was horribly shoe-horned in. Poor transition to it, quick overview of it, and then the one guy was bashing it. Why? "Because all Mustangs look the same to me."

What was that about? I was hoping the US version of Top Gear would finally give American Cars their due. Especially one with the stats as promising as the Boss.

Should do a full segment like how they did the Viper.

I knew if and when the BBC Top Gear did a feature on the Boss or LS, the first thing out of their mouth would be about the rearend being a tree trunk or a I-Beam since I've heard it many times before.

Just my 2 cts but I think they should have just held off until they could have done a actual road test with the car. Tanner being an experienced race driver and the LS being the true track car, his comments about the front spoiler, the rear axle and it just looking like any other Stang were not positive.

The show is still new and you can tell they are still trying to define their show. I think they would do alot better if they quit trying to make it an exact copy of the orignial.

Yeah, the Boss segment was cringeworthy. Tanner has driven an M3 for a long time. So his sour grapes were dishonest. The Boss would KILL the M3, since the standard 2011 GT with Brembos matched or beat an M3 in every category already. For that matter, all BMWs look the same - bland colors, overpriced, and boring interiors, free maintenance & BMW driver attitude inserted by a licensed proctologist free of charge.

A bulge in the hood, a nicer set of wheels, a fancy badge, that is all that visually sets the M3 apart from cheaper 3 series. But a standard base GT @ $32k would walk all over any BMW 3 series less than an M3 all day in every way. Even with the dreaded live axle. Facts are facts. But I'd like to see Paul Tracey in a Boss LS and Tanner in an M3 and see what is what.

That exhaust sounded awesome. Can't wait for aftermarket quad exhaust...

I do love the British Top Gear, but since they used a rental V6 convertible and called it a GT and raced it around a dirt oval against a real horse - and the horse won...I have not trusted their apraisals of American cars. Then they raced a Shelby GT (baby Shelby - called it a 500hp car) against an RC model...really dishonest and pathetic. IF they had a point to make, they would not have to lie. I am sure that RC car would have beat a Porsche or Audi R8 as easily as a Mustang.

Oh man I can't wait to see this later tonight on DVR...agreed on the sentiment that I was hoping Top Gear US would not have the UK's unpleasant bias towards American cars. :-/

Somebody still watches that show? I gave up on it after painfully sitting through the first episode. For you guys that still watch, I hope the presenters have gotten better.

All the episodes were filmed earlier this year, so I doubt it. If they make it to a second season, I'd expect them to take some of the public input into account.

No, they haven't gottin any better, and the only one that can drive worth a sh*t is Tanner.

Two of the 3 hosts of the British version were not car guys when it started. May was a car magazine guy, Clarkson was/is a jouirnalist, and Hammond was a radio host and TV presenter - none of them race car drivers. Having Tanner Faust on the US show is ok, but I wish Adam Corolla was on the team. The other 2 I have never heard of. Their chemistry sucks still, but it is easier to watch than the New Knight Rider.

yeah, i half expected tanner to make a comment. however, he did a 'supercars exposed' episode where he drove a turbo gt500 and made a comment regarding it being the most powerful car he's ever driven.
'rutledge' is pretty funny and a decent presenter. faust is good due to his experience with hosting other shows. the other guy is pretty bla and will be the first to be replaced.

LOL - I know, right? - honestly, I do not care what their personalities are like, or if the hosts are like-able, I just was hoping they would do a similar, on par job as the British version, but with an American flare and emphasis on cars from the biggest car market on the plant (well, besides China).

American roads are straight - then 90 degree turn, then straight again. No winding village roads or single lane B roads like England. So it would be nice if the show focused on US-style driving and not on how great a car is on a track. Tanner is always going to look at cars from a track viewpoint - that's why he showed up in a 300Z hoopty. The Caddy and Turbo T-Bird were the honest choices.

BMWs are nice and all, but muscle cars are more useful in the US. The wife has a Lexus IS 300 and it is a legit early 2000s 3 series comparison. Never get to use it as intended - straight for 300 yards, then 90 degree turn, then straight for 3 miles...Mustang GT/Boss would be much more entertaining than BMW or IS 300 for my everyday driving. It is nice on a mountain road, but a Mustang would be too. And more fun on the 20 mile journey to the mountains.

Just my 2 cents. I just hope the US Top Gear is fair to US cars. There are a lot of great new ones on the road now and some real classics. I'd like to see them held up against the best in the world from MB and BMW and see how Cadillac holds up. Or 1950s American cars compared to ANYTHING from another country from that era.

So far I like Rutledge, occasionally I find the New Jersey guy amusing. But Tanner, well I guess other than being a decent competition driver (I still find calling drifting - racing a bit of a stretch) doesn't do much for me. BTW cannot wait for The Boss to wax the M3's tail! (Wagon axle and all!!) That is if they have the cojones to do a head to head.

Rutledge seems like the most like-able of the 3 - and maybe the BOSS has already waxxed the M3 in a show they already taped and that is why Tanner was butt-hurt. In the BOSS segment, even the New Jersey guy asked Tanner why he was so down on the Mustang.

I don't care if they have negative opinions on the cars, just as long as they are honest.

When Tanner slammed the splitter, for being too high, was he right?

I ask because, it seems like splitters (on race cars) look like they could scrape snow like a squeegee.

He is definitely a JERK!!

Ford Racing put the splitter on the car...I will humbly defer to them as "knowing what they are doing" and call Tanner a whiney baby. He said all Mustangs look alike, the splitter was too high and once again bagged on the rear axle...but did not acknowlegde the fact that the benchmark to beat was the current M3 - and Rutlegde pointed out that the BOSS smoked it. Tanner did not deny that.

IF Ford Racing put the splitter on the car and then left the car too high to take advantage of it, I would not be surprised, as people will need to get into their driveways. AND, 90% of owners will never use the BOSS to its full potential. So...maybe for everyday use, the splitter is useless, but then again, so are the adjustable shocks and rear wing and other go-fast bits that are standard on a lot of cars sold as "track oriented".

For those car mags and blogs that take the BOSS to a track and run it like they stole it, the splitter will help. For the people that buy it and make payments on it, the BOSS will most likely never get full use of the splitter.
