I'm gonna be home on Sept 17th and will be taking my beloved Boss out of storage and will need to change the oil ASAP and I want the oil and filter on hand ready to go.

Good luck finding an Autozone or Advanced that caries 5w50, seems like they are few and far between. If you go to your local dealer or a good recommended dealer in the area they may cut you a deal if your a forum member. Mine gave me 10% off so it came out to being maybe 100 total with the filter.

update...
oil change was $115. im ok with that...and since they did the work they tell me they cover anything wrong relating to the service that was done...if anything does go wrong...
also, trackey not installed....found out you had to pay $302 for the activation code? (go figure!!) so was dissapointed today...not at the dealership, but at ford for making us pay for something like this....

out of curiosity, are you guys running all running one extra quart? (9 quarts)

is this a boss specific thing, or is this also a good idea to run 9 qts of 5w-50 in the regular coyote engine as well?

The boss uses 8 1/2 quarts. 9 would be an extra 1/2 quart. Another member on the forum, I believe it was cloud9(not 100% it was him) found out that there is no benefit for running extra oil.

Why would you want to pour in more than the specified amount? That just gets in the way of the crank.

i've never done this myself, but the few possibilities that come into mind are:

more volume = more oil available when sloshing around in corners
and more volume = more oil not being circulated in the engine, so potentially cooler temps?

i've seen vorshlag make brief comments on using 9 qts in a coyote, but no one else as of yet. maybe they use a slightly bigger oil filter?

the extra .5 quart is from the oil cooler, correct?

My Ford Dealer charges $10 per qt and gives me a 10% former Ford employee discount.

Back over Memorial day weekend, NAPA was running a sale on Mobil 1, roughly $5.75 per quart. Mobil does make a 5W50, and NAPA is able to get it, you just have to ask. Paid up front and picked it up the next day.

I bought 3 cases, total of 18 qts, for a little over $100. Then just buy a motorcraft filter or two, and I'm into each oil change for about $60.
