Lightning Lap

Just got the new Car and Driver on my ipad (Zinio App). The Boss 302 LS did very well. 3:02.8. Fastest Mustang they have ever tested.

......not exactly sure why the number 3:02.8 is fast?
What does it mean?

Last year's tests.

http://www.caranddriver.com/features...p-2011-feature

You can see some of the other times. They try to keep it similar, although you can't truly compare year to year times. Last year the GT500 did a 3:04.

How appropriate is that 3:02.8!

Err yep, to put that in perspective, the Boss LS is only 2 seconds off the Ford GT's best time and bettered last years GT500 by 1.2 seconds.

It also placed nicely in between the Posrche Cayman R( or was that S - but it was the track model in any event) and Porsche Panamera Turbo something or other (then designation escapes me at the moment).

I wish they wouod have included the standard Boss with the torsen though just to see how much of that time was due to LS specific equipment.

In last year's article, C&D says their drivers couldn't get a clean lap because they had problems with the 2-3 shift.

In this video with a Ford SVT driver, the lap time is 2:58.48. Both the C&D car and this one are equipped with the Performance Pack.

Hey whose side are you on? That doesn't look like stock seats and lap belt in that car. What else did they change?

I'm on Ford's side. I don't believe in a waging a GT500 vs Boss battle. The car looks to be a Ford test mule. With what is in the description on the YouTube page, I'm guessing that nothing engine or suspension related is changed from a production version and only things for safety or telemetry were added/changed. The car has 100 more HP. With a track with some long straight sections, it's reasonable to think it would have a better lap time than the Boss.

This is from the YouTube page for the video:
The engineers at Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) recently did some track testing of the new 2011 Shelby GT500 at Virginia International Raceway (VIR). This was to test the cars ultimate limits at one of the worlds most technical and grueling road courses. Vehicle Dynamics engineer Gene Martindale pilots the 2011 Shelby GT500 coupe equipped with the new aluminum 550hp, 5.4-liter engine and the optional SVT Performance Package. With a lap time of 2:58.48, the 2011 Shelby GT500 with the SVT Performance Package is over eight seconds a lap faster around VIR than the 2010 model. That's a lap time comparable to six-figure super cars!

You will always see faster times with factory drivers who have spent countless hours behind the wheel of the cars. If you did a lightning lap with each car AND it's respective factory driver, all of those times would be down by a few seconds if not more.

That would be the better comparison... Too bad they don't do that. It would be less dependent on the C&D drivers' styles matching up with the cars.

i agree. I'd like to see all the manufacturers do a "run what you brung" format with their own driver and a showroom stock car at a few tracks around the county to see what's what.

Time = Engine

Did anyone else notice that the 302 did it in 3:02?
