Laguna driving around sans bumper?

This was an interesting specimen I caught yesterday.

Laguna Seca with Hawaii plates, rear wheels looked like the black/silver Ford Racing version of the LS wheels, front left looked like possibly a GT500 wheel. No front bumper, some LED strip light under the headlamps, and a Tiger Racing hood.

That's kinda sad to look at, but surely they're in the middle of upgrading. Or maybe they had a bad experience at the track.

Might also be a GT getting made into a Boss LS

Since that's the Boss 302S hood, I would guess it's an LS getting an upgrade. If it was a GT, I would expect the hood would have been painted at the same time as the roof was.

Unless they did the red and are waiting for the front end to come in so they can spray all of the black at once.

That's not LED lights at the bottom of the headlamps. That is the ridged ledge which is made into bottom of headlamp that supports the bumper cover when it is in place.

Too funny! That's me (well, my son was driving following me to the body shop to get the bumper and hood painted)!!

This car was purchased by my buddy in Hawaii at the same time I purchased my LS and all he lives for is coming over and driving track events! At our last track event in Buttonwillow (2 weeks ago), the new Hoosiers were backordered at Tire Rack and he elected to run the odd combination shown in the pic. Those are front rims with Hoosiers from his Ford GT and on the rear is the too-worn OEM Corsa's. This combination worked well enough a few weeks prior (not recommended, but a compromise) but at the last event, it got us in trouble.... I was riding shotgun at the time and we came around a right-hand sweeper at about 60mph and lost the rear-end.... completely. My buddy did a nice job getting the car straight as we headed off the track.... and we thought the worst was over..... until we saw the large dirt berms in the infield!!! Can you say "Dukes of Hazard"! Anyway, it was probably more fun to watch than it was to experience. The LS actually came away MUCh better than we thought. The berms caused the splitter to disintegrate and also tore up the bottom of the bumper as it pulled off. The AC condensor took a wallop (but didn't puncture), and a piece of the splitter must have caught one of the plastic radiator side tanks - taking a big chunk out of it.

Repairs were VERY easy to make - they could have been done trackside if we would have had the spare parts. New OEM radiator and entire front bumper skin were each less that $200. The AC condensor would have been sub-$200 as well, if Ford didn't make it unique for the Boss!! (2011 GT condensors are cheap! The Boss condensor is NOT!) Anyway, the condensor was $650ish and a new LS splitter with brackets was just about the same.

Absolutely no damage, marks, or issues with suspension, subframe, etc. Just several cosmetic/aero pieces.

Anyway - we weren't hurt, the car suffered some cosmetic bruises, and all is about fixed and ready for another track day!!! The CF Tiger hood was just installed and we were discussing paint alternatives when this happened. I will pick up the car this Saturday (hopefully) from the paint shop and share some "after" pics. Most importantly, the heat-treated new Hoosiers arrived from Tire Rack the other day so we can get back to some matching shoes!

Glad to hear everyone (car included) is okay.

Wait a minute, might you have it backwards? The radiator is also Boss specific and lists for 675$, while the condenser is 100-200$. Are you sure they gave you the right rad?

Nah, Chris.... I said it right. The OEM Boss radiator is sub-$200 and the condensor is not the same part number as the 2011 GT (which is sub-$200). I'm in Boston on business this week, but can give part numbers when I return.

Glad no major damage was done. I look forward to seeing it repaired with that hood, I was thinking of doing that myself.

My curiosity has been put to rest. Glad everyone and the Boss came out just fine and am looking forward to seeing the finished project.

What paint shop is it being entrusted to? I need a local spot.

The $1M question..... I will let you know!!

I think paint shops are crazy expensive these days!! I went to two different larger and presumably "reputable" body shops and got near identical quotes. $700 to paint the hood and ~$600 to paint the bumper. Yikes!! This is more than I would have guessed. Honestly, I went to a small shop in Chatsworth with the expectation of getting a better prices - talking directly with "Carlos". I ended up liking Carlos a lot and I think he has the right "demeanor" to do good work. (Saw some of his work also.) Funny thing is that he was even slightly MORE expensive than the others - but I think he cares more about his work. Anyway, too soon to recommend him. Let's see how it turns out. I also left him a second CF Tiger Racing racing hood (mine!) to paint.... so I am anxious to see how it turns out!!

Wow! Living in Hawaii and keeping an LS on the continent just for driving track events. That is a true Mustang enthusiast.

Right prices and part numbers, names are switched though. Darn. No worries for you, but I was hoping the rad was suddenly cheaper.

CONDENSER ASY
Part #: CR3Z19712A $139.95 $117.56
RADIATOR ASY
Part #: CR3Z8005A $677.48 $569.08

At that price you might as well get the 302S radiator.

Glad to see that I was wrong, again. I'm surprised no one has posted a "LS goes off at track" video of the whole unforunate incident.
